Default New Truck: 2017 Ford F150 Raptor

Coming up on a year of Raptor ownership… Only one major problem to report: At 5,388 miles, the transfer case seized up and tore itself apart when I was on my way home from a family trip in Yosemite coming down the mountain. Ford decided to replace the whole t-case rather than repair. Thankfully, I wasn’t off-road when this happened.

Shortly after taking ownership of the Raptor, I went to Utah to participate in the Raptor Assault program that Ford Performance offers for free to everyone that bought a 2017 Raptor. It’s a full day out on the trails in the mountains and desert south of Salt Lake with an instructor. You use their trucks and are taught the capabilities and limitations of the vehicle.

So far, of the 8,500 miles on the vehicle, about 1,200 of those are off-road. I’ve jumped, crawled, gone 90+ mph on dry lake beds and washes, trail pinstriped, and ripped desert donuts with the truck. It’s incredibly fun and it seems the harder you push the truck, the better it performs. The TT 3.5 Ecoboost V6 may sound like trash, but it sure is powerful.

Here’s a few pictures:

Can't say for sure, but doing those desert donuts might (?) have contributed to the failure of the transfer-case. That's a fair amount of stress.

Supposedly everything on it is over-engineered but....

Yeah, the t-case failure at 5K miles was unfortunate and I lost a little faith in the truck. However after the t-case was replaced, the truck shifted much smoother than it did the previous 5K miles which makes me think that there was an issue from the beginning. Prior to the replacement the shifting was harsh and there were clunking noises.

So you were not able to shift into 4WD? Was that the issue?

I was in 2H when it failed and it would not go into 4H or 4L.

That really sucks. Did Ford tell you exactly what went wrong? Is it in the back of your head now that this happened?

They didn't have an explanation and said it looked like a bomb went off in the transfer case. I was pretty paranoid to go off road thinking that it could happen again, but after driving with the new t-case installed, it was apparent that there was a problem from day one with how harsh the truck shifted and sounded. Additionally, I noticed that the Raptor Assault truck I was driving in Utah ran much smoother. I have about 2,000 miles on the new t-case and have pushed it pretty hard with no issues.

well that is good that you feel more confident. Is your shifter a manual one or a electronic shifter?

not sure why anyone would want to drive a giant truck with the 3.5 turbo ecoboost and a stick.
not sure it's even available...

I am asking about the 4WD shifter and not the transmission shifter.
