I would question the Accord with their known history of transmission failures. I know a guy who has had 5 and all of them except the one he has had transmission failures before 80,000 miles.

As some American and Korean-badges vehicles sharply improved their quality after the buyout of 2008/2009, I suspect that we will see more of them reach 200K as time goes on.

That's just a mindless clickbait article from Carscoops. In order to get context you need to go to CR and find out what they're actually saying. The "scoops" article says nothing about model years and trouble spots. CR went from the newest to the oldest cars they had membership data on.
For eg. if you actually sign into CR as a subscriber, you'll find out that CR's owners reported Honda Accord transmission troubles from 2000 all the way to 2004. Major transmission problems spanned 01 and 02. From what I recall the automatic Hondas had issues going from 98-05, especially V6s.
But what CR indicates is, that if you are keeping a vehicle long term look carefully at the list they've compiled and check specific years for trouble spots. Compared to other vehicles, their basic list should point you in the right direction.

The analysis compensates for the popularity of cars among CR members. Simply put, these are the most problem-free cars that have proved to go the distance. Many other models in our survey have made it to 200,000 miles, but they required significant repairs to get there in the past year.
The cars that shined in this analysis would be considered used cars at this point. To help new-car shoppers, we have highlighted the latest model years below. We encourage you to click through to the model pages, where you will find information and pricing on both new and used cars.Given that we're looking at a long span of years for this analysis, be aware that road-test scores, reliability, and other ratings vary over time. Whether buying new or used, it's smart to check the ratings on CR's model pages for the specific model year that you're considering.

How am I supposed to that without a time machine. I replied as soon as I saw the thread.

You didn't state right after the original post how you expected it to turn out and yet an hour after the thread is posted and some CL posters answer it, you say it is turning out as expected. What did you expect then? Something based on some previous threads then? Just curious.

My question about American badge vehicles is that we have been hearing since around the mid 2000s that American cars are better and on par with the Japanese. Should we not see bread and butter cars like the Malibu or whatever the Ford equivalent is on the list?

Your originating source is not CR, but Carscoops. In the actual CR article they specifically state very clearly to paraphrase: throw enough money at a car and any car will 200K. I'm sure mmarshall can log in and confirm this. It means that a list is just a list by some website without original attribution from the source or more details. That was my original point.
