and if this is the G70's "biggest issue" it will be fine.

I do not agree. If Genesis cannot lead the pack on a brand new introduction, they will not succeed once the established players work out their new platforms and engines. This Genesis needs to be superior in every way to the existing and future competition. I will say, if the new IS looks anything like the new LS, I think Lexus is going to be in for a lot of hurt.

I would buy one.
An IS350 RWD is rated at 23 mpg combined, so only having to give up 2 mpg to get over 50 more horsepower and nearly 100 more lb-ft of torque seems reasonable. I would go so far as to say a G70, at 21 mpg and 365hp/376lb-ft is leading the pack over an IS at 23 mpg and 311hp/280lb-ft.

I have no idea what engine the next IS will have or what its power rating will be, but I do not expect to see a new IS until 2020 or 2021.

We're getting off track, but I strongly doubt it. That would only be a 5 year life cycle (2014-2018). The ES is coming for 2019 and we've been seeing spy photos for months. Nothing on the next IS yet. The 2nd gen IS went for 8 model years (2006-2013).
Do you have a source for claiming 2019 or is that your guess?

the genesis 3.3T is under-tuned... if they want a 400hp one it's trivial. why didn't they do it to start? not needed to make a splash and i'm sure they want to be sure there's no gremlins found in the field...

I don't dislike the LS design. I just think it won't it will be as successful long term. Same thing with the LC.

My view on it is that it comes to market with a stronger engine (in both hp and torque) than most of its competition, with competitive gas mileage, solid pricing, great features, what appears to be a fantastic cabin, and solid handling (from reviews, anyway). If I were in the market for a sedan of this size, this would absolutely get me to switch brands. I'm even considering switching from my GS to the Stinger. Kia/Hyundai/Genesis is on to something here, at least in my opinion.

Infiniti, MB, BMW all have 6 cylinder options with sub 4.9 second performance. All three exceed the G70 in efficiency. All have good interiors and aside from Inifniti, both MB and BMW have legendary brand strength. Even Lexus struggles against BMW, Audi, and MB...So here comes Genesis in a established and crowded market that is shrinking, I just don't see the G70 being strong enough to be as successful as everyone thinks it might. Can it take away from the existing Lexus IS? It could. Will it? All depends on how strong the Lexus brand is.
Where you must give Genesis credit for are:
-a manual transmission offering
-a limited slip differential
-five trim levels to choose from
-Brembo brakes
