Welcome to CL. If it hasn't been started for over a year, then yes, the old battery, if not disconnected, was likely dead, which, with the typical parasite-drain of computer-memories, would typically start to happen after about two or three weeks. Even with a brand-new battery, who knows what kind of condition the old fuel is in the tank? Even with fuel in the best condition, not starting the car for awhile will dry up the fuel lines and require an extended period of cranking for the fuel pump to get some gas to the injectors. It's possible (but not certain) that you may need the fuel tank drained out, cleaned, and re-filled with fresh gas. After an engine has not been started or driven for that long, I'd also be concerned about engine/transmission seals drying out and cracking or being damaged from the lack of fluids being circulated in the system.
That is why cars vehicles that are shut down for extended periods of time have to go through special procedures, both before and after, to keep them from deterioration.
