It's not a myth, it's true—storing car/truck batteries on a cement shop floor will cause them to discharge faster and decrease their life.
At one time the insulating material used in a batteries was poor and tended to leak so putting the battery on a concrete floor would inadvertently cause the underside of the battery to conduct, draining the charge. For anything resembling a modern battery, it's a myth.
Yeah I was going to say wood for the floor jack. Useful trick if you're jacking a truck with a normal type floor jack and you can't get it high enough in the air. Put a couple 2x4's on the jack. Just make sure your jack is strong enough and always put a jack stand under it in case the floor jack decides to crap out on you.
