It's even more of a stretch to call this thing a Blazer than Ford's upcoming four-door Bronco.

While I respect the varying points of view here, IMO, as with the Bronco, a true Blazer has two doors. Ford, at least, seems to be giving the upcoming Bronco its traditional squarish styling, even if it has four doors. This thing looks more like a redone Equinox than anything I would call a Blazer.

The true full-size (K5) and compact (S10) Blazers were two doors. There was the mid-sized TrailBlazer, whose design was shared with the GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Oldsmobile Bravada, that had the four doors.

Thats not true the K5 Blazer was always 2 door but the S10 Blazer was 2 door or 4 door. The S10 version was brought out to compete with the Explorer which also was 2 or 4 door:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_S-10_Blazer

First gen 4 door Blazer 91-94:

Second Gen 95-2000:

It was in 98 it became the "TrailBlazer" as a trim line of the Blazer:

In 2001 the "Blazer" name was dropped and replaced with "TrailBlazer", but the vehicle was always a next generation of the Blazer.

So, seeing that they started making 4 door Blazers ~ 29 years ago, the new Blazer being 4 doors is not odd or "sacrilege" at all.

Blazer = full size, two door. Name changed to Tahoe in 1995, when 4-door became an option.
S-10 Blazer = started as a 2-door in 1983. 4-door added in 1991 to compete with new Explorer.

Does it really matter? Most people remember the Blazer as the mid size four door model, that naming structure lived longer than the the large 2 door blazer that was renamed Tahoe.

You are a big GM fan, surprised you missed that he said below. The Trailblazer was the high end trim line of the S-10 blazer.

Not just that, but the smaller four door blazer named lived on longer and more recent that the 2-door K sized model. Being a two door model is not a huge deal with the naming.

All of this is just making an issue out of nothing. The current Tundra does not have the original clam shell doors in the line up and no longer offers the reg cab model, so is it not a Tundra anymore? The Pacifica was not a van at first, nor was it a hybrid. I am sure there are many many others.

To me, saying just "Blazer" without "S10" means the original. But I can see others not referring to it the same way.

Yes and no. There is a redneck cult following building for the larger K5 Blazer. I think it will leave a bigger impression as time goes on.

When I think of the Blazer I think of the "S10" Blazer. I don't even think of the K5 Blazer. The S10 was the more popular iteration, and like was said the K5 may have a "redneck cult following" but those people aren't going to be buying the new Blazer.

I'm a pretty well versed car guy and it would never occur to me to think this new Blazer was odd because its 4 doors....

I don't think the 4-door issue is the only sticking point with traditionalists. It is also not a body-on-frame SUV like its predecessors.

It's true that a lot of traditional full-size, two-door, truck-based Broncos could be found in backwoods places, ranches, construction areas, etc.....but the so-called "redneck" image (as with many automotive stereotypes) is clearly overdone. I've seen a number of people who work in high-tech office buildings, sitting in cubicles, that like these vehicles. In fact, one of my former colleagues bought an F-150 simply because Ford, at that the, had dropped the big two-door Broncos (as Chevy also had done with the big K5 Blazer) and he couldn't get one brand-new any longer.

I agree, BTW, that they probably aren't going to be interested in a 4-door crossover...that's one reason why there still is a used-vehicle market for the big 2-door Broncos and K5 Blazer. Most of them, though, are getting pretty old and worn. One of my favorite waitresses at Romano's (Italian Grill), before the local branch shut down, had an old full-sized 2-door Bronco that her boyfriend had given her...it had clearly seen better days.
