Mercedes-Benz is only 92 years old, and can trace itself back to the world's first successful motorcars, which debuted in 1886, 132 years ago.

Founded: 28 June 1926; 92 years ago
Founders: Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler

Mercedes-Benz is a global automobile marque and a division of the German company Daimler AG. The brand is known for luxury vehicles, buses, coaches, and lorries. The headquarters is in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. The name first appeared in 1926 under Daimler-Benz.

Karl Friedrich Benz was a German engine designer and automobile engineer. His Benz Patent Motorcar from 1885 is considered the first practical automobile. He received a patent for the motorcar on 29 January 1886.

Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler was an engineer, industrial designer and industrialist born in Schorndorf (Kingdom of Württemberg, a federal state of the German Confederation), in what is now Germany. He was a pioneer of internal-combustion engines and automobile development. He invented the high-speed liquid petroleum fueled engine.

... In 1885 they designed a vertical cylinder version of this engine which they subsequently fitted to a two-wheeler, the first internal combustion motorcycle which was named the Petroleum Reitwagen (Riding Car) and, in the next year, to a coach, and a boat. Daimler called this engine the grandfather clock engine (Standuhr) because of its resemblance to a large pendulum clock.

Toyota is 85 years old, not that much younger than Mercedes-Benz.

The history of Toyota started in 1933 [85 years ago] with the company being a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works devoted to the production of cars under the direction of the founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda.

That's very strange? After that event at Citi field we went to visit my friend's grave (my wife remembered we set the coordinates as a favorite and it's in Forest Hills, NY), and there had to have been tens of thousands of headstones, some of which looked like trees (it's unfortunate that I learned a lot about my friend's culture through his wedding, and death). I can't remember any of them mentioning cars.

As far as finances go I have realized I don't like to pay for unexpected repairs (wear items are just fine), and I always think DIY is my escape route, but time and space and equipment is my enemy...

Agreed...

I don’t see how somebody can be a car enthusiast and refrain from wanting to have good cars.

Mira a car forum, not a financial management forum lol

Take the former editor of Car and Driver, wouldn't you know I ended up with the same car as he did? Either I have good taste, or he does, or something lol

Point is they don't have unlimited resources like people on YouTube, so they have to choose...it's like following a bus driver when there is congestion, or a cop when you want to get something good to eat and don't know the area...

For me it is simple, I buy car that is most reliable. If MB, let's say S550 comes as a number one in terms of reliability I will switch to MB.

The problem is that not all agree on what is a "good" car.....even among enthusiasts. That's why the car mags, in their comparison tests, vote on the results. Occasionally, though, some cars, like Miatas, Accords, and older BMW 3-series with the hydraulic steering, do get a lot of "enthusiasts" to agree on them. Those cars, for example, made the Car & Driver Ten Best List for literally decades.

What is a good car to one might not be a good car to others. You make it sound like one should sacrifice all so they can drive a good car (in your eyes) regardless if they can afford it or not.

Within the context of this discussion, by searching Google. I was surprised to learn that Jay Leno owns (not rent or lease) his garages, shops, and all of his cars.

Exactly. Your Corolla, for example, is considered one of the best cars on the road for those who simply want reliable, basic transportation and nothing else. It is not a typical "enthusiast" car by any means, but offers the aforementioned basic transportation with a reliable Toyota drivetrain and a decent amount of refinement for its price-class.

He can obviously afford to. He made tons of money on his income from NBC and the Tonight Show, not to mention his other ventures.

He is extremely rich, he can afford it. I don't even think he uses what he got paid for the Tonight Show to buy anything, he uses money from stand up comedy. Even while he did the show he did stand up every week.

. And if we did not have other priorities and if I didn’t care about long term value and keeping my cars for a long time. I would get something else at the price point. I would never ever buy a Toyota or Lexus and keep it for less than 10 years (my previous CT was a mistake), Toyota’s and Lexus models are not that great of a car, they are in the middle of the road. They just don’t break all that often which is what I like. To be honest, I would rather drive my Corolla over my 4Runner and our Matrix is a mixed bag and it’s the xrs model with a larger engine. Much firmer suspension. As for the husbands LX450, at 11MPG, it really sucks filling it up. It handles horribly as well. Slow as a pig. Noisy.

True. But point is, at filthy rich. He is still thinking best financial ideals while being a huge enthusiast.

Thta not true at all. There are a wide variety of cars that can be bought at a wide variety of price points that are well made, desirable, stylish, fun. There are also many used cars that one can buy for very little money that would also fit the bill.

You’re running around here passing judgement on others, but when some judgement comes your way all of a sudden “well what’s good to me may not be good for you”. Well, yeah it’s exactly the same thing we’ve been saying to you about the financial stuff, yet the judgement keeps coming.

“Buying an S class makes no sense”. Okay, I don’t think buying a Corolla makes any sense if you like cars. There are multiple similarly priced cars that deliver a whole lot more enjoyment IMHO than a Corolla. “It lasts a long time” is all well and good, but why would you want to drive a car that you hate for a long time? I’d rather drive a car I like and make some repairs. Not saying you hate your Corolla, but I would hate it.

I would not hate a Mazda 3, a Honda Civic, Subaru’s Is rather have a Crosstrek or something like that. Kia and Hyundai have some interesting new models. Lots of options for people who don’t want to or can’t spend a lot of money.
