critics here who just think porsche did nothing or next to nothing obviously don't know much about porsche history... while the exterior design changes are often subtle, they often don't instantly communicate a ton of smaller and bigger changes in chassis, suspension, engine, transmission, electronics, interior, etc.

25 yrs ago for comparison...

911 is not a 4 seater. It might as well be a 2 seater with some rear storage space. The backseats in the 911 is useless.

This.

This.
Most 911's have rear seats, rear seat belts, and people can sit back there hence it is most definitely a 4 seater or 2+2 even if it is really cramped, a Cayman or 488 is strictly a 2 seater, no way to get anyone in back.

Yeah. I know they have rear seats and rear belts. My point is that its so small - no one really uses it. Its almost no point in using it. I have tried sitting in rear seat of a 911 - cramped.

I surely wouldn't want to ride in back of a 911. If anything I would like to be in the driver's seat. But I've been a rear-seat passenger in back of small coupes, and even the more reasonable ones are tight on headroom. Probably the most comfortable coupe I can think of that I've been in back of is the BMW 4-series coupe, and it's quite large in back - really surprising to me actually. But the 911 is more of a pure performance car, so I'd expect little in the way of comfort in the rear.

This.

911 rear seats are some of the worst in the coupe game. Its a useless rear seat. They should have just made it a 2-seater, imo.

But also true. BMW rear seats in their coupe seems to pretty roomy compared to other brands.

It was me, (and I'm a two-time 911 owner) who originally made the 2 seater comment.

I'd assumed everyone would have seen it for the obvious half-joke/half-truth I intended. It wasn't meant as a literal statement.... Didn't mean it to spark debate haha

The 911 is indeed technically a 2+2, but with that said I can say without hesitation that the "+2" we're discussing is mainly used as a parcel shelf by 911 owners.

Even kids struggle to sit in the back for more than a few minutes.

Yes, there are 4 seats - but 2 of them are essentially cosmetic

That's a picture of 964 which was succeeded by now ultra legendary and the most desirable 993 which also carries the same sheet metal as 964. What came next? Ultra hated 996! 996 is the Porsche that has changed everything in a single model year, that didn't sit well with conservative Porsche owners who cried for their 993 back. 996 has introduced 911 to people who never considered the Porsche because of that conservative image and i want to believe that 996 is still the most desirable 911 among those who don't like 911. Now what's funny is that Porsche is afraid to go through another sheet metal change as the new one (however it's going to be called) will be the third generation of 911 with same body panels as hated 996. 997 gave back some of the styling cues of 993 and the rest goes from there.

My brother finally picked up his new 2018 911 Convertible - he custom ordered it, took almost 4 months to arrive.

He is not big into cars but didn’t consider anything else but 911.
Porsche sales guy said 80% of 911 owners never buy anything else.

I personally love that designs evolve gradually.

great post but i don't think you challenged me, you supported that there's been a lot of changes!

about 'hated' 996 - that also brought in water cooling, which 'change haters' hated.

this is a great article on the evolution too.
