Doug DeMuro on why the Toyota Land Cruiser costs 85K
Unlike with most Toyota-badged products in the American market, buying a new Land Cruiser (and, sometimes, even a used one LOL) , will essentially clean out your bank account. In this video, Doug explains why. He's a good reviewer...IMO not quite as good as King Alex (Dykes), but he does his job. I've reviewed a couple of Land Cruisers myself (the latest one a couple of years ago)...and they indeed feel and drive like they are carved out of a block of granite, though I'd say that the Mercedes G-Wagen has more bank-vault-like doors.
At 4:08-4:10, I like the way he compares the Land-Cruiser's front grille to the spindle-grille on the Lexus LX570 LOL.

lol yes that's definitely one of the quirks and features of a doug demuro video...
i was super happy to see this video in my latest subscriptions, i love the land cruiser and just think it's the most "SUVish" of all the SUVs. i'd say the proportions couldn't be any better, except i think the 100 series holds that title:
this is the optimal "elbow out the window" vehicle as i put it lol... if i could have the 2006 land cruiser but with the 5.7 engine in the new one, i'd say that's as good as it gets. the 2008 and newer model with that engine seriously moves, i think it's like another 100hp over the previous model which is a big difference. i always have a tough time deciding if i want to consider the 80 or the 100 series to be "the land cruiser" since they're both totally awesome in their own way. if i didn't have so much fun with the E55 i'd definitely get rid of that and replace it with an older land cruiser, but ideally a 2006 since that's when they added VVTi, increasing power from 235 to like 280.

well consider that the current design hit showrooms in 07. So parts for the new ones are still used. So 2019 model in the year 2029 will still fit a 2008 model that came out in 07
The Lx450 we have, the parts are very difficult to get. Takes a long time. Not cheap. All come from Japan.

Really nice post. All LX up until the current refresh were very close. Athletically, the new LX has really separated itself compared to the current Land Cruiser.

Take a look around any junk yard in the US and tell me how many Land Cruisers you see.... probably zero unless they are rusted carcasses up north or totaled vehicles. People just don't get rid of these things. I was in Colorado for a week running trails on mine and literally all you saw were Toyota trucks and Jeeps. Plenty of 20+ year old Toyota trucks being driven hard and abused like you would not believe. Not a single G Wagon and not a single Range Rover on the trails. This was the peak of the season so there was a ton of traffic.
Take a look around any junk yard in the US and tell me how many Land Cruisers you see.... probably zero unless they are rusted carcasses up north or totaled vehicles. Oh yeah. Just drive a 100 series Land Cruiser or LX and then drive a similar year Sequoia right afterwards. Night and day difference.
The one area I wish the Japanese got better at is rust protection or just using better steel and aluminum that's treated to withstand salt environments. It's sad to see the underside of a Toyota truck after only 3-4 northern winters where salt is used. On the other hand, German cars survive much better. Might just have to do with Japan's EPA laws because generally speaking Germans use MUCH better paint also, well known fact within the bodyshop/detailing community. Mercedes Ceramiclear paints for example are some of the best paints on the planet, light years ahead of anything the Japanese ever offered, stuff is hard as glass (well not really, but the closest thing to it in the paint world haha). I imagine the Germans implement similar epoxy paints on the underside on anything that's steel, hence why it survives so much better than Japanese cars that already use thinner steel and just a light coat of cheap black e-coating on all the frame member and suspension components.

maybe the germans learned their lesson at stalingrad to make sure nothing can be defeated by winter again
and about the toyota frames rusting, that was afaik only the tacoma, tundra, and sequoia. and it was mainly only a few model years affected by the premature rusting issue, since many of those frames came from mexico and i think ohio too.
there was a bad batch of frames from the north american sources and the issue seems to be fixed now. luckily all those owners can get a new frame put in for free, i saw it happening all the time. the land cruiser and 4runner are both more or less exclusively japanese in source and those frames didn't have the rust issue.
something else i think is often overlooked about the land cruiser is how great the overall dimensions are. it's literally smaller than the honda pilot, and because you sit so high up with nearly straight vertical walls around you, i find it's pretty easy to maneuver around a parking space. the tall, upright, commanding... DOMINEERING... AUTHORITATIVE appearance makes it look big but it really doesn't take up that much space.
and also thanks to it not being that big, it's really quite adept at pulling off the high speed, highway diagonal dash between two cars when the situation calls for it. i imagine not as much for the FJ80 lol, but the current 200 series with that big ol engine can boogie!

The replacement frames for the Tundra are coming from Mexico.
