Default spike strip causes crash with a bystander

it's almost like, what did they think would happen!? having all those cars parked on the road directly after the spike strip, a device literally intended to make a car spin out of control

luckily everyone seems ok

We don't know the whole story from the video, but, from the sound of the sirens, and the speed that jerk was going, it looks like he (or she) was trying to outrun police. Probably had drugs/contraband in the car, or had maybe committed a bank robbery.

That poor girl in the front seat apparently hit her head on something during the crash......hope she recovers OK.

i think they were almost certainly trying to run from the police lol, but i'm just saying that seems like a terrible location to lay down a spike strip when there's a whole row of cars lining the shoulder right after the spikes

Yeah, seems questionable to me, too...but maybe the cops had to make a quick decision under the circumstances, and didn't have the luxury of taking all day to think about it. That's one of the demands of being a cop.....gotta make some very quick decisions sometimes.

Looks like the driver of the speeding vehicle tried to avoid the spike strip and then correct, but couldn't due to the blown tires. I guess the cops were assuming he would drive straight over them instead.

The cops are idiots for laying a spike strip on a street with stopped traffic. Unless that guy killed somebody or something Police putting everybody's lives in danger for what?

Not enough context to draw all these conclusions.

What if the driver had an automatic weapon and was on his way to a public area? Would it have been better to just follow him to a public place and let a shootout ensue?

The point is that it's all speculation, and placing the blame on the cops or calling for lawsuits comes secondary to catching the driver.

At the speed that the front end was hit by that sliding car, the crash might have set the air bag off and popped her on the head....although, for some reason, it apparantly did not pop the driver's bag.

Hah....if the cops did let him have it, the ACLU would be all over them, even if the jerk deserved it. We'd have another riot like in Ferguson, MO....only this time, not necessarily race-based.

Jeez--that's just plain negligent by those cops.

You're making a lot of assumptions yourself, so..

It's absolutely ridiculous to place blame on anyone but the speeding driver here. If the spike strip wasn't laid here, a ton of other worse things could have happened. Driver could have attempt to blow through a busy intersection and T-bone a vehicle or cause a collision at a high speed. Driver could be going through a neighbourhood or school zone with children playing in the streets. Instead, the car hit a spike strip that caused it to lose control and hit a parked car. Better to be hit by a sliding car in the safety of your vehicle vs. getting hit by a car at speed with nothing to protect you.

The people in the car definitely have grounds to sue. But if I was the one calling the shots, I would have risked a lawsuit by laying the spike strip there instead of risking the lives of other pedestrians.
