Default 2019 Lexus RX350 versus Infiniti Q50

We are in the market for a luxury SUV and have it narrowed down to Lexus RX350 and Infiniti Q50. We like both very much but were kind of leaning to the Infiniti because of the gas mileage and extra features the Essential had to offer. Now we find out that the Infiniti requires Premium gas so the extra gas mileage might be a mute point if it costs $10 more to fill up.

So what gas does the Lexus require? What are some real gas mileage readings that people are getting. I think the reading said it got 20 in town and maybe 27 highway.

Also what about the navigation system - we were looking at the larger one but it looks really confusing on how it works.

Thanks for feedback.

Guessing you meant the QX50, Q50 is a sedan (I had one )

You can use 87 in the RX350.

The navigation system in the Infiniti is horribly dated. People like to give Lexus crap about theirs but the Infiniti system is 10x worse. I much prefer the Lexus system with the single 12.3 widescreen versus the 2 separated small screens in the Infiniti with completely mismatched fonts, resolution, graphics, one is matte, one is glossy, etc. Not only that but the powertrain in the QX50 with the new VC-Turbo motor seems to be the wrong fit for that car. It gets great reviews in the new Altima but not so great reviews in the QX50. In my opinion, it makes sense to be in the Altima but should've never made its way to the Infiniti side of things (though, not much differentiates Infiniti from Nissan these days. SO much switchgear/buttons/controls in Infinitis these days are identical in their Nissan counterparts. They even share the same instrument cluster).

Anyway, haven't driven the QX50 but have driven the RX350 & RX450h many times for extended periods of time and they're wonderful vehicles to live with. If I had the extra space & means, I wouldn't hesitate to have one in my fleet. Everyone loves them. You really can't go wrong with an RX, though I'd wait for the 2020 if you can. It's rumored to be updated and is also rumored to be getting a brand new touchscreen infotainment system, so it seems like the interior will be getting a complete overhaul.

qx50, with a new designed VC engine.....if you are leasing fine. If you intend to keep this long. NOPE.

Everything else is upon personal preference, take some real seat time on interface etc. These are not powerful bleeding edge level of tech machines, so its upto personal preference.

We own a 2017 RX350 that we purchased new. Couldn't be happier with it for our purposes, which is basically family hauling / Costco trips / taking stroller in and out / etc. If you're looking for a family SUV that has a luxury touch, excellent build quality and a quiet comfortable ride on the freeway, the RX350 can't be beat. Its nice bonus to only use 87 octane gas.

I haven't drove the QX50 but like someone said above the reviews on the QX50 are not that great, the motor and MPG results I have read and seen have been disappointing with it. If you are considering that car to purchase, I would suggest stick to the RX350, or maybe look at the Acura RDX or MDX. The Infiniti motor is too new to see how it will last.

Welcome to the forum.

We're getting around 20 mpg (mostly city) with the RX 350. It will be a bit thirstier than the QX50 but the the 3.5L V6 runs on regular and will be smoother and more audibly pleasing than the 4 cyl Turbo 4 banger in the QX50.

I have had experience with both touch screen Infotainment interfaces (i.e. past Lexus and now Stinger) and remote control versions (i.e. Lexus) and any day I will take the Lexus Remote Touch (RTI) setup with the larger further recessed screen as I prefer the comfort of my rested arm (instead of extending it). And contrary to what many say, I find it less distracting as the larger recessed screen is closer to my line-of-sight while driving. With time, you master the "stepped-selection" movement of the RTI making the experience pleasant.

Good luck and happy shopping!

Edmunds has a long-term tester QX50: https://www.edmunds.com/infiniti/qx5...erm-road-test/

In January 2019, for their monthly fuel economy, they averaged 20.2 mpg. Here's what they had to say about the fuel economy overall:

Our overall average after 12,320 miles is 21 mpg. The EPA-rated combined rating of 26 mpg seems laughable.

Thanks so much for the feedback. We ended up getting a 2019 RX 450h and love it so far.

Does the RXh not need premium? You mentioned you nixed the Q50 because of that?

I find it interesting how often the octane requirements of a vehicle come into play in purchasing decisions. The RXh is a hybrid anyway, so hopefully they won't mind putting 91 in it.

I have never ever used premium gas on ANY of my vehicles even if listed as required. I have never ever run into any problems or issues and I do rack tons of miles.
