August 1983
At a top-level, top-secret meeting, Toyota Chairman Eiji Toyoda determines the time is right to create a luxury vehicle to challenge the world's best.

TOYODA was Toyotas founder's name. But the D in TOYODA took more brush strokes than T in japanese so he changed it to to toyoTa so it could be easily written.

Having studied Japanese for 6 years I can say that the statement above is pretty much correct, if you say TA and DA. I'm curious though, where did you hear that?

Toyoda takes 10 brush strokes, but Toyota takes 8.

I heard about this as well, I can't remember I was reading some book on the Japanese car industry that I used to have and it stated that they changed it from Toyoda to Toyota.
Oh yeah, and I'm nearly a year YOUNGER than when the Lexus dream came alive
