Toyota to begin producing Lexus NX compact luxury SUV in Canada
Toyota announced today that it would start producing the Lexus NX at its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada facility in early 2022. Few details are available, and these questions remain outstanding:

- How much does Toyota intend to invest in TMMC to build the NX?
- Will there be a fourth assembly line added to TMMC? Currently, there are three lines: the South plant (in Cambridge, Ontario) builds the Lexus RX (which was the first Lexus assembly line outside Japan), and the North plant (in Cambridge, Ontario) and West plant (remotely located in Woodstock, Ontario) build the RAV4.
- Does the 2022 start date mean that the next-generation NX (sharing the TNGA-K platform with the RAV4) will not be introduced until 2022, or will that be the introduction of the mid-model change (facelifted) NX?
- Does the 2022 start date mean that the next-generation RX will not be introduced until 2022, at which time it may be shifted to a new assembly line, freeing up space at TMMC for the NX?
CAMBRIDGE, ON, April 29, 2019 – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) announced today that it will begin producing the top-selling Lexus NX and Lexus NX Hybrid compact luxury SUVs at its Cambridge, Ontario facility starting in early 2022.
“Building on our recent Toyota RAV4 announcement and our recent facility modernization investments, we are excited to announce that TMMC has been selected to produce the popular Lexus NX and Lexus NX Hybrid models for the entire North American market,” TMMC President Fred Volf told Team Members and dignitaries, including the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada and The Honourable Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier of Ontario and Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, at an event earlier today.
In 2003, TMMC became Toyota’s first facility entrusted to produce Lexus vehicles outside of Japan – a tremendous honour within Toyota – and has since made more than 1.3 million Lexus RX and Lexus RX Hybrid vehicles.

Toyota will soon build a new vehicle in Canada, adding the Lexus NX luxury SUV to its Ontario assembly plants as of 2022.
The company made the announcement at an event at its Cambridge, Ont., facility on Monday.
Currently the factory, along with a plant in nearby Woodstock, Ont., produces the Toyota RAV4 crossover vehicle, and two versions of the Lexus RX.
A new assembly line at the Cambridge facility will be added to build the new vehicle starting in three years. Both a gas and gas-electric hybrid will be produced at the site.
"It means that Toyota's Canadian manufacturing operations are here to stay," Toyota Canada president Fred Volf said. "It means that we will continue to be a leader in Canada and globally."
The company did not specify how much money the company was planning to invest, or how many jobs the new production might mean when it starts. But in an interview with CBC News, Volf said it provides stability to the plant looking ahead.

The move comes as the car making industry in Ontario has been waylaid in recent months by General Motors's decision last November to shutter its Oshawa facility, and Chrysler's decision last month to cut a shift at its Windsor assembly plant, leading to 1,500 job losses...

There has already been a mid-cycle refresh of the NX, so I'd expect the 2022 to be a new model based on the new RAV4.

Good for Toyota and the community where this product will be built. It really is amazing how Toyota can allocate product to their plant in Canada while GM is closing up. Toyota gains a lot of goodwill by doing this.
