Default Value of Certified warranty extension?

The finance guy wore out his vocal chords trying to get me to buy any number of overpriced and/or unnecessary services at the end of our purchase. He is why Carvana has appeal. Anyhow, the one he pushed hardest was a 3 year extension of the L/certified warranty. 5 years/unlimited miles instead of 2. What do you think this is worth? He kept harping on the cost of replacing one of the “fifty on-board computers”. We will keep this for at least 10 years and 120,000 miles but with proper maintenance are hoping for more.

It’s for my near-mint condition 2013 RX 350 w/44k miles. Claret Mica with Saddle Tan seats that look untouched by human tushie. New brakes and tires, and every service performed at Lexus. I sure hope that it has 164,000 miles in it.

As has been the case since the beginning of Lexus, there is no need to waste your money on an extended warranty. 99% of the time, these cars/suv's last forever without any major problems. Save your money and ignore the scare sales tactics of a dealer.
Good luck.

I agree. I don't think its worth having an extended warranty on a Lexus.

He offered 2 years for $2,900! When I showed no interest he offered 3 years for the same price.

When I showed no interest he showed me a price list of everything that could go wrong.

When I showed no interest he threw in key protection.

When I showed no interest he threw in rim protection.

When I showed no interest he pulled out a binder with copies of checks paid by the insurance company.

He gave up.

We paid cash but that’s not the point. It has some positive value but one would hope less than $3,000.

I also bought a certified used car today. 2016 LS460 with 16,000 miles. The finance guy pushed the extended warranty also. Lexus Extra Care = x years/unlimited miles. Beyond expiration of certified warranty.

Quoted 1450 - 1 yr, 1850 - 2yr, 2250 - 3 yr, 2750 - 4 year, and 3275 - 5 year.

I have to say that i am not a fan of extended warranty, but the chance to have unlimited miles beyond the CPO is appealing. 3275 to get almost 8 year unlimited mile warranty (from right now) might pay off big.....if ikeep the car that long. With my driving habits the car will have almost 200,000 miles by then. Certainly something will fail, no?

Then again, they kind of lock you into using dealer for service ($$$) and doing your intervals religiously, which seem a little excessive and expensive to me.

You could set aside $3,200 as self-funded insurance. If you you need more than that it's a shame and you will have lost the insurance bet. If you need less than that you will have won and have a nest egg. It's a pretty safe assumption that you'll come out ahead since they base their warranty cost such that they will make a healthy profit.

I completely understand that, just for the irreparable electronics.
