Braided metal lines are stainless and don't rust, but thanks for trying.

Rubber hoses, due to ozone, pollutants in the air, heat/cold, and other factors, often break or fail before metal ones. And, as Steve points out, braided-metal lines resist rust and corrosion.

Braided lines are still rubber inside the stainless is there to help resist expansion, in theory better pedal feel. In the salt belt braided lines are worse because crud gets past the braid and rots out the hose.

Thanks for saving me from having to explain further.

Metal lines are much more resistant to rot from external elements is the point. Brake lines don't deteriorate from the inside out, they weather and wear from the outside in. Its not so much about salt as much as it is just about time, ozone exposure, etc.

Salt doesn't impact rubber lines.

Stainless flexible lines are NOT designed to prevent degradation in fact the coating makes it worse, they are to prevent hose expansion. In fact some braided lines have an additional coating on top to prevent contamination.
Also, if dirt finds its way in between the steel braid and the Teflon in a stainless steel brake line, an abrasive environment will be created that will compromise the Teflon over time. You will often find that manufacturers of stainless steel brake lines encapsulate the stainless steel braid with a coat of plastic to keep dirt out, to remedy this weakness.

Heard back. Brake line busted at the frame where I could "obviously" see the fluid. Now just looking at the rest of the lines, which I will give the go-ahead to just replace no matter what.

Thanks. Will do.

I don't doubt what you are saying. But salt definitely had a contributing factor on a lot of the components for my 4Runner. To be honest, I am little bit disappointed in the numerous issues that this vehicle has had. I know it is 15 years old, but still.

Yep, mine are coated by clear rubber.

So what you're telling me is that quality braided metal brake lines won't last longer than the OEM rubber lines? I don't buy that.

I don't know about other brands but Toyota flexible lines are incredibly long lasting if you keep them clean and 303 them once in a while they will last 30+ years.

Nobody is going to clean and 303 their brake lines. And clearly these didn't t last 30+ years.

I doubt the failure of the OP was the rubber line. The steel hard lines are probably what let go. I've had rusty and crusty jeeps with original brake hoses. The lines are the weak point. Not saying braided lines aren't better (I've used them as well), but rubber brake hoses will in most cases last the life of the vehicle.
