I do it, and I know other people that detail their cars including the chassis, suspension etc. in fact this is a common practice. I know someone with an under body pressure washer.
And clearly these didn't t last 30+ years.
You know what the failure was exactly? Do tell.

A short update: The brake line failed due to rust and corrosion. Most of the lines will be changed. It is about a $350 repair. I did not take this vehicle to a Toyota dealer.

well the brakes worked

have you owned the 4Runeer since new? did you often take it to a carwash that also rinses the underside -- to remove salts? or just once a year or never or??

That's not bad for extensive work on brake-lines, provided they do the work correctly. While, ultimately, of course, it's your decision, not ours, either way, from a lot of what you have posted lately, not only in this thread but in other 4-Runner-breakdown-threads, sounds to me like it just might (?) be time for.....

And you don't have to buy brand-new.....there are a lot of good used 4Runners for sale.

80s-vintage Toyota trucks were notorious for that.....right along the bed/beltlines. I've explained that, in detail, why, in other threads.

No different than either of my cars. I don’t drive the LX450. My 4Runner I have been less than thrilled with for quality, there have been numerous quality issues and it has less miles than the Matrix. I do not drive it more than once a week or two. And yes, it’s been in my family since brand new. And it’s never ever been garaged.

I assume the rubber lines should last. The line that broke was not near the actual brake. Was at the frame near the steering under the brake booster.

So how do you exactly clean the lines?

I do know someone who has a 1996 T100. I know him from the marina where we go. He does not have the rust issues like this. He does work on his own truck I do know that. He now has 600K.

I clean the underside every spring, 4 jackstands and various chemicals. Rubber stuff like CV boots, brake lines and bushings I hit with 303 Protectant. Sometimes during the winter I go to a drive through wash that has an undercarriage spray. I also Fluid Film the car before every winter.

Doing this I've been able to keep the 30 year old car from rotting away, has been driven in winter every year.

Calgary. A big part of the problem here is they use plain old salt with a bonding agent, and way overdo the amount. It's so bad that in the spring there are clouds of salt blowing around as you drive.
