Next-gen Subaru WRX STI due next year with new engine, new platform
According to a story in Japan's Best Car magazine, the fifth generation arrives late next year with a new platform and engine as part of the automaker's Japanese-market overhaul of the WRX STI, JDM-only WRX S4, and Levorg wagon. The STI is expected to switch from the current turbocharged EJ20 boxer-four to a direct-injection FA20 boxer-four engine with output of around 315 horsepower. Note, the Japanese-market WRX STI uses a 2.0-liter engine, the U.S version gets the 2.5-liter EJ257 with 310 hp. The U.S.-market WRX (sans STI) already uses the turbo FA20, but it makes 268 horsepower.
The WRX STI will finally move to the Subaru Global Platform that the Impreza switched to in 2017, which will hopefully go a long way in improving ride comfort around town. The six-speed manual makes the switch as well. Best Car says the four-door's size won't change much, but the looks will crib from the Viziv concept - something everyone wants - with a design language called "Dynamic x Solid," U-shaped LEDs, and "greatly inflated front and rear fenders."

Joke? I disagree. The STI has long had a reputation as one of the best rally-cars on the planet. So did the Mitsubishi Evo, though it was dropped from the American market.

Well a family sedan from Toyota is pushing 300hp. You'd think a world famous rally performance car could muster something a little higher than 315hp. For $5k more you could get a Supra pushing 380hp (no, it isn't 335hp when the dyno machines are measuring higher than that at the wheels).

Really no competition left for WRX so they can do whatever.
I hope they make it look cool and bring back the hatchback.
Probably Civic Type R is closest rival now.
Too bad Mitsubishi killed the Evo.

Pretty much a unicorn.
Supra is 2door coupe that nice as a 2nd car or if ur a single person.
2 very different target markets.

I do think it's funny that y'all are arguing about whether or not the new FA 2.0L turbo for is a suitable engine at 315hp, while completely glossing over the fact that we won't even get that. The US model will carry over the ancient EJ 2.5L turbo that makes 310hp.

I certainly wasn't arguing for more power. If one looks at this car objectively (which, apparently, some here are not doing), it, along with the Evo, is already one of the best rally-machines in the world.

Yeah but it's slow stock. High 4 second range is rather pedestrian / mediocre in these times for a performance car. When it first launched here in the states, it was a high 4 second car to 60. It's still a high 4 second car to 60...where is the evolution? When it launched, it was one of the fastest cars you can buy for the price. Now, you can get a family sedan that does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds for low $40k (Stinger). Times have changed but seems the STI hasn't.
