You may or may not be aware of this, but the older G (Gelandewagen) was a vehicle first designed, back in the late 1970s, for the German and Austrian militaries...hence its extreme durability. Not only that, but, even today, it still represents the old Mercedes (their only vehicle that still does), when virtually everything they built was like tanks, before Lexus and Infiniti came along in the 1990s, and Mercedes ended up cost-cutting in their designs to compete with them.

whether one is a fan of the g wagen or not, it's undeniable that it offers a genuinely unique experience, far more so than even the land cruiser / LX... the combination of a basic structure and foundation far more ancient in design with way more power just makes for such an interesting time driving it

having driven a few, if i ever see one speed past me i have much admiration for whoever's driving since i know how wayward and ponderous the steering is... and then i'm subsequently permeated with despair as i remember that those 2 solid axles, 3 differential locks, and low range transfer case are being totally wasted
