FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 1, 2019 – Hyundai Motor America reported September sales of 51,951 units, a 9% decrease in comparison with September 2018. Following two straight months of double digit sales growth in July and August, Hyundai closed the third quarter with total sales of 173,028, an increase of 5% over the third quarter of 2018.

Sales Summary

Sep-19Sep-182019 YTD2018 YTD

Hyundai51,95156,940506,356492,792

Retail Highlights

Hyundai’s third quarter retail sales were up 3% compared with the third quarter of 2018, while retail sales also declined by 9% in September. Hyundai’s SUV and eco-friendly vehicle lineup achieved retail sales growth in September, led by Santa Fe (up 5%), Kona (up 20%) and Ioniq (up 20%). In total, retail SUV sales finished at 25,649 units, the best ever September retail total, representing a 60% mix of retail volume. This was the third consecutive month exceeding 60% SUV retail mix.

Total Volume Highlights

Hyundai SUVs set their all-time September total sales record, selling 27,374 units and growing 9% compared with September 2018.
Kona sales increased by 22% setting a September record and Hyundai’s flagship premium three-row Palisade SUV continued to turn quickly at 50% efficiency, selling 3,495 units. The SUV performance represented 53% of total Hyundai sales compared with 44% in September of last year.

Hyundai’s eco-friendly vehicles also performed well with sales of all alternative-fueled Hyundai vehicles up 102% including
Ioniq growing a significant 74%, setting a September high. Additionally, Hyundai continues to reduce its dependency on fleet sales, which were down 10% on the month.

“The fundamentals of Hyundai’s U.S. sales performance remain strong, with increasing retail sales, lower fleet volumes, reasonable incentives and well-managed inventory,” said Randy Parker, vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “While the September year-over-year results were skewed because of the Labor Day weekend timing and two fewer selling days, we were pleased with the efforts of our entire team and retail partners in achieving growth in the third quarter. Once the final numbers from our competitors are reported, we anticipate gaining market share for the quarter and on the year.”

September Product and Corporate Activities

  • Palisade Earns an IIHS TSP+: The 2020 Palisade was awarded a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with optional LED headlights. • Kona Best in its Segment for Tech Experience: The J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study ranked the Kona as the highest scoring small segment vehicle for overall technology satisfaction.

SUBARU OF AMERICA ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER SALES

  • 67 Consecutive Months of more than 40,000 Units
  • 74 Consecutive Months of more than 10,000 Forester Units
  • 67 Consecutive Months of more than 10,000 Outback Units
Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 51,659 vehicle sales for September 2019, a 9.4 percent decrease compared with September 2018 due to low days supply and three fewer selling days compared to September 2018. Year to date, Subaru has sold a record 525,329 vehicles, up 4.4 percent compared with the same period last year despite a tightening market.

“2019 is already turning out to be another record year for Subaru thanks to the excellent efforts of our retailers,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Due to the rapid sell-down of the last generation Legacy and Outback models, our yearly, month-over-month sales streak of 93 consecutive months came to an end in September. We look forward to robust sales in October and are on target to achieve our 700,000-vehicle sales goal for 2019, marking 12 consecutive years of sales increases.”

“Buoyed by the sales success of the all-new Forester, and strong demand for the outgoing Outback and Legacy, we started September with historically low inventory levels,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “With the all-new 2020 Outback and Legacy starting to arrive at retailers and a strong book of presold orders waiting to be delivered, we look forward to strong sales in October and the remainder of the year.”

Earlier in September, Subaru announced the sale of its 10-millionth vehicle in the U.S. The new owner took delivery of a 2019 Subaru Impreza at the oldest Subaru retail facility in the country, Nate Wade Subaru in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“It took us 41 years to achieve our first five million sales, and just over 10 years to achieve the next five million,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America. “Accomplishing this milestone reflects our commitment to providing customers with vehicles made to the highest standards of safety, reliability and dependability.”

"Following the best sales month in our company's history in August, the Honda brand delivered balanced sales performance across our passenger car and light truck offerings," said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co. "As we enter the final quarter of 2019, we are expecting a strong finish to the year for both the Honda and Acura brands."

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

With fewer selling days and none of the big Labor Day holiday sales totals falling in September, Honda brand sales were down compared to Sept. 2018. Still, both cars and trucks posted solid sales to counter industry trends.

  • Gateway models Fit and HR-V performed well, gaining 79.6% (2,707 units) and 25.9% (7,528 units) respectively, vs. 2018.
  • CR-V posted a strong month despite a brief stop sale to allow owner's manuals to be updated before deals could be consummated.
  • Civic and Accord continue to fight industry truck trends, with combined sales totaling over 42,000 units as Honda cars topped 46% of Honda brand sales for the month, compared to industry sales of about 30%.

Model Notes

The 10th-gen Civic is headed for its 4th straight year as America's retail best-selling car and a full decade as the country's most popular compact.

With the 2019 Passport named a Top Safety Pick, every Honda light truck—SUV, minivan and pickup—now earns a TSP crashworthiness rating from IIHS.

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

While the shorter month and luxury brands competing on price challenged year-over-year results for the Acura brand, gateway Acura models ILX and RDX performed well to maintain brand momentum.

  • ILX gained a solid 15.9% on sales of 1,078 units.
  • While key competitors are spending aggressively to capture sales, RDX remains strong with sales topping 4,300 units to maintain its #2 position in segment
  • Acura SUV sales continue to lead the brand with total sales of over 8,000 units.

Model Notes

The RDX is on pace for another record in 2019. Acura's hugely popular compact luxury SUV has earned annual sales records in 8 of the past 9 years.

Following its 2019 refresh, ILX is America's fastest growing compact luxury sedan, serving as Acura's gateway model by bringing in more first time, millennial and multicultural buyers than any other model.
