The stunning 2021 Toyota Mirai...

I saw the rather extensive comments on the car over at Ars. Surprised that some commenters said the car looked awful!
This really is a Lexus-class vehicle, and I like the grille a whole lot better than the spindle. It reminds me a lot of the Tesla3 snout.

Looks like it could be a next gen GS.

It technically is. The new Mirai is based on the RWD TNGA-N platform that underpins the Crown.
Great move. People who pay luxury car money should not be expected to settle for an econobox with a nerdy look. The new Mirai will now be a proper premium car that can live up to the expectations of luxury car buyers (save for perhaps a luxury car badge). The huge 30% increase in range to 400 miles certainly helps too. They now need to focus on a cheaper model to compete with the Model 3 so that more people who want one can afford one. And of course, build more refueling infrastructure.

The way all you guys are talking, may as well bring the Toyota Crown over here.
The Mirai II is a hydrogen fuel cell powered electric Crown.

According to Alex Dykes, who I generally trust more than any other reviewer, it is probably, though not confirmed, done off the LS500 platform, which, I believe, is related to the Crown. Here is a short video where Alex does a basic introduction.

So this new Mirai is based on Toyota's "premiums RWD" platform.....
I had in previous Tesla criticism that eventually the big companies with their vast resources, they will start to use their money to attack the segment...in the Toyota press release: “
Toyota
plug-less” electric vehicle.,
Toyota is working to develop a line of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and includes FCEVs in its electrification roadmap.
Toyota remains committed to hydrogen fuel cell technology as a powertrain with tremendous potential. It’s a scalable technology, which means it can be made small enough to power a phone or large enough to power a building, or anything in between.
Happy to see Toyota is going after this segment.
