Tesla Model 3....America's next cult-car?

you didn't respond to the more important point that is that driver did 8+ typical years of driving in a tesla and his battery life dropped a whopping 3%.
and model 's have been out there for what, 7 8 years now and i haven't heard of disastrous degradation. maybe you need more data, but obviously a lot of people are convinced at this point.

Average data suggest 5% degradation after 2 years of the flagship Models S/X.
Smaller battery capacities in volume selling Model 3 will degrade faster.
This is why we need independent 3rd party data - of which there is presently very little of.
That's why we all just have to be patient and wait.
Let the early adopters be the guinea pigs.
However, theorotically - they are the points to consider.
Watch out for battery degradation.
Even the manufacturer Tesla will only guarantee 70% remaining capacity at the 8 year mark for this so called Cult Car.
I know I wouldn't be happy if my fuel tank was reduced by 30%....

At the moment, there is no evidence that this one off case is really true; it could have been fabricated?

Absolutely.
I find a lot of parallels to the Tesla "cult" and what used to be the "Prius" cult. We had a 2004 Prius which was the first year of the second generation Prius, and it was insane to get one, 8 month waiting lists here, $5k over sticker. We travelled to WV 6 hours away to find one on the lot for MSRP and bought it. Huge fan groups, forums full of Prius enthusiasts (most of which were not car enthusiasts which I find true of Tesla folk also).
I think a lot of those Prius folk probably now have Tesla Model 3s.

I wouldn't be able to handle 30% reduced range in a gasoline powered motor vehicle.
However, keep in mind that this is all speculation at the moment.
Can't wait till some short term preliminary data on Model 3 degradation is released.
Theoretically, a smaller batter pack in Model 3 should have to work harder than big packs in S/X, hence faster degradation.
Ultimately we need the long term independent 3rd party data.
Just all speculation at the moment, so enjoy......

Tesla will leave the low-priced EV market to other brands. Two coworkers just scored insane deals on the eGolf. Starting price is around $34K, very close to Model 3 money, but dealerships gave $10K incentives and the eGolf still qualifies for another $10K in State and Fed tax credits and rebates. Of course the eGolf doesn't really compare to a Model 3 but it ended up costing less than a Corolla!
I recall reading an article that Toyota plans to release several all-electric vehicles in the next five years. I just wonder if five years will be too late.

I would disagree, since the Tesla folks invade every single car thread on this and several other (non-car-related) forums I frequent.
"What's the best reliable daily driver under $5k?" "You should really get a Model 3"
Anti-Tesla folks generally only threadcrap in response to Tesla posts.

Cult car? What is it? To me it would be the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Saw thousands of these in the early 2000's. Many clubs formed.
Yesterday I saw a Tesla Model S in person for the first time. Wow, What an eye catcher. It now is on my dream list Too bad it's so pricey.

Ha ha that's definitely true here in these forums.
