Two things.
1) you don't understand the history of Lexus
2) the ES and resulting Camry were made with as little compromise as possible. Compare that to Lexus vs. Toyota now.

So? LS development started in 1983, it was for the American market.

Do you not know the history of Lexus?

ES250 definitely not but LS400 yes, made for USA first.

LEXUS= Luxury Export for United States

So what? Still made by Toyota. I don't understand the issue or knowing the history.

Toyota wanted to make the best luxury car for the United States. Hence, Lexus as a brand was formed.

LS400 wasn't designed for Europe (though some did sell) or anywhere else, it was engineered primarily for North America/USA.

And it was only a couple years until Lexus was the #1 brand.

And I do not disagree with you. But it still says "Made by Toyota Corp" on the door.

Lol I do not disagree with you either. I'm not sure if my 430 says Toyota in the door jam but I have seen it somewhere.

What I'm saying is there would be no LS400 if it weren't for the United States; it was designed as a Lexus first, not to be called a Toyota.

Fair point. But the Celsior was released at the same time in Japan. So depending on what side of world you live on, you may view things very differently. I personally view every Lexus ever made a just a high-end Toyota, our Lexus we currently have is just a high end Toyota.

Yeah the whole "premium brand" thing doesn't matter over there in Japan. Just like how they don't like leather which I respect as a culture but I just don't get it.

I think it happens to just be that in Japan, the Toyota brand is such a cultural icon. There is Toyota City after all. Toyota is a top 10 brand for value worldwide. Toyota is such an important thing for the country. A long history. It’s kind like the Ford brand to the USA...or GM with Chevrolet etc.

Yes, agree. I wonder if Toyotas rule the road over there?
