Default October 2019 Sales Thread

GM Sales Expected to Drop in October

Auto sales should stay steady, moving along at a near-record pace, in October. However, some car companies will suffer a fall-off in sales. First among these is General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), America’s largest car manufacturer.*** Automotive expects sales nationwide to rise 0.2% in October to 1,366,000. The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) is expected to dip, but not at any alarming pace: “The SAAR in October 2019 is estimated to be 16.9 million, down slightly from last month’s 17.2 million level and down from last year’s 17.5 million pace.” After five years of annual sales at or above 17 million, the industry has had an extraordinary run. At the depth of the recession, in 2009, national car sales fell to a 27-year low of 10.4 million.

In October, GM is expected to post a sales decline of 5.1% to 230,000, compared to October of last year. *** management says this is for a specific reason. “The bigger threat is fleet activity, which could drop dramatically. Any order fulfillment due during the strike period was likely delayed, thus fleet delivery volume is expected to be lower.” GM is expected to hold 16.8% of the market, the largest share by far.

In a rare occurrence, Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) is expected to edge out Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) for second place. Toyota’s sales are forecast to be 192,000, or up 0.5% from last year. Ford’s are projected to slip 3.5% to 185,000. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.’s (NYSE: FCAU) number is anticipated to be just behind that at 182,000, 2.6% higher than last October.

Among the smaller manufacturers, two companies are forecast to post surges in results. American Honda sales are expected to rise 6.4% to 130,000. South Korea’s Hyundai Kia is expected to post a sales gain of 7.0% to 105,000.

If the car industry is a bellwether of how the American economy will do in the near term, it is clearly not signaling any recession. People often buy and hold their cars for several years, and car loans can stretch to five years or longer. In short, what is probably the largest purchase, aside from people’s homes, signals that things are well.

"With the Honda CR-V topping the 5 million cumulative sales mark to reaffirm its position as the best-selling crossover for over two decades, it’s fitting that Honda crossover and light truck models led Honda to an all-time October sales record,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co. “Both the Honda and Acura brands are marching forward as we head into the final two months of the year on pace to see American Honda post a sales increase for 2019."

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

The harvest moon shone brightly on Honda sales, with new October overall and truck sales records and cumulative CR-V sales cresting 5 million. Several models made major gains with trucks leading the way as HR-V set an all-time monthly record and CR-V a new October mark. Civic and Fit also made major gains.

  • HR-V set a new all-time monthly record, jumping 104% on sales of 10,130 units.

Honda has led the industry in sales to under-35-year-old buyers since 2010, with Civic and Accord the #1 and #2 cars, CR-V the #1 CUV/SUV and Odyssey the #1 minivan

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

Another strong month for the Acura brand brought a new October truck sales record and an overall 2.4% sales increase, with a particularly strong month for ILX, the retail #1 sedan in segment, a 10% gain for MDX, and RDX sales on pace for another annual sales record.

  • MDX sales climbed 10.4%, pushing Acura trucks to a new October record.
  • ILX sales jumped 35.4% in October, with 1,430 units delivered.
  • RDX sales topped 5,800 and combined with the enduring MDX for total truck sales of 10,256 units.

Model Notes

Nearly 99% of all Acuras sold in the U.S. are made in America, with five of the brand’s six models built at the company’s three Ohio auto plants.

MDX is out-retailing 3-row SUVs from Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Infiniti, Tesla and Volvo in 2019, and has done so in every year since 2010.

For the month Telluride 6,075 and Palisade 4,347. Nice volume for both new SUV's.

Does Genesis post their sales anymore? They don't seem to appear regularly any more even quarterly.
