I get in my spouse's car and ALWAYS have to put it on auto because it's on some stupid manual setting.

We'll take the (non-serious) arguing over it to our graves.
The solution to this is to get a car that ties the HVAC settings to the key.

Ditto! I see it when people get into a hot car and rush to turn down the AC and I'm like, just relax and it will do its thing...

Using AUTO is also much more energy efficient, obviously a bigger issue in your home than your car...but turning on and off the HVAC and letting it get warm or cold then turning them back on and letting them coold down or warm up uses way more energy.

Isn't the whole point of the AUTO climate that it has a mind of its own?

I'm kidding, but we might as well have mods close this thread.

NOBODY will change their minds.

that just means you have the temp set too low.

If the AUTO is so perfect or flawless . Why do they have a backup manual mode?

for control freaks like you.
Or rather, for those who don’t like cars with a ‘mind of their own’.

He’s just joking (hence the smiley), don’t be so sensitive.

There are options for people who want to control the system in different ways.

I mean, I wouldn't really call it a "backup manual mode." You have to manually adjust the defroster, and when you want heat on the floor and the defroster.

It's flawless for me, I never said it's flawless for everyone. I don't understand those who don't use auto, but I'm not begrudging them for it.

My own spouse never uses auto.

Imagine how crazy that's gonna drive me eventually when we get the LX with those 28 air vents and true 4 zone climate control. If we spring for a '16+, the wheel and seats are included in "auto." I really like the Lexus Climate Concierge. What a waste because it will only be used when I drive it, and the truck is primarily going to be for the spouse.

Not in my cars with auto . It chooses where the vents want to go. I can’t choose anything aside from the temp

Are you saying you can choose AUTO vent control but decide the direction of the defrost? Mine just goes to defrost when it wants

That’s why it’s AUTO...if you select everything that would be manual.

Auto doesn’t select defrost mode in most systems, unless there is a humidity sensor.

If it's a true auto system it should control air temperature, fan speed, and where the air is coming from based on the inside and ambient outside temp.

If I want defrost or defrost plus floor heat I have to manually adjust for that, but I still leave it on auto so it will blow the right temperature.

I've never heard of a car that goes into defrost mode on auto. How would the system know the windshield is iced or fogged?

Both my Highlander and my GS have humidity sensors on the windshield and will automatically go into a defogging mode. It seems to work very well when the windows are fogged up, which occurs frequently here in our rainy winters. I park my cars indoors at night and we don't get a lot of ice/frost, so I am not sure how well it works to detect windshield ice.

Correct, every system I've ever had makes those selections.

Its becoming more common, my GS350 did. LS460 does not but LS500 does. You'll see some cars have a humidity sensor at the top of the windshield that detects when moisture has built up on the glass and activates the defroster. I've found as long as the system is set to AUTO I never have any issues with fogging windows.

Here's an excerpt from the ES manual:
