Tesla allowed to sell and service cars in Michigan!
About time...

According to the article, there are some odd stipulations regarding titling a Tesla, but at least it is progress. Tomorrow should bring more firm and official details.

Under terms of the settlement, Tesla would be allowed to deliver vehicles in Michigan so long as they are first titled outside the state. A Michigan owner could then get the title switched to Michigan.

would you pay sales tax twice though?

The state requires dealers to contract with an auto manufacturer to sell vehicles, meaning an automaker could not act as both dealer and manufacturer.

not sure if that's true if it's a transfer into state.

Yeah, at least this is a beginning. Hopefully, the out of state registration requirement will be changed before long.

Tesla stock is on a tear lately. What price will it be at when it can sell and service in all 50 states? The 21st century transit economy is getting started and Tesla is overcoming some challenging odds under 20th century franchising rules to favor the old school network. Good for Tesla.
The market sure likes continued growth story news and gigafactory ramp up... How can they not with Model Y, Semi, and Cybertruck on the horizon?!
The real threat to Big 3 - Detroit automakers is what a few billion dollars can do in a hurry and highly automated production lines. There's nothing Detroit can do to be competitive with this speed and scale up. For the longest time, VW was taking great pride in how they could retool their plants to switch over to electric/hybrid. Easier to talk about it than to do it. I think Elon Musk hinted what Audi should have done when they had their $20 billion + diesel gate snafu (which was to go all in on EV and go zero emissions). They missed the memo and basked in sales surge across all VW and Audi products due to trade in, discounts to any owner of a diesel gate vehicle. A more entrenched petrol company with a boot strapped eTron or tricked out Taycan in limited quantities at or above $100k is a test the market solution, and presents no real threats to Tesla.
You want an EV? Tesla is defining what an EV vehicle is all about and owning the market to itself. Give it another 5-10 years to see who is up to the task or learn how the market bails out to 'hybrid' is the best we can offer at this time. By 2030, Gigafactory 8 - 10 ( 5-7 more than now) should be up and running. Why so many ? The Cybertruck and it's variants can be just as big as the Model Y & 3 and could justify it's own factories for this platform.
These price points are crazy. It is not a growth strategy. A severe market correction would be the best time to buy back in and we do have some major political headwinds on deck in China, Europe/UK, and in the USA. I'm happy to see Musk earn his bonus for pulling this off audaciously.

Did not expect the surge to $500+ so soon. A huge WOW on that. The naysayers have turned around into bullish viewpoints. The sellers using 2019 calendar year to cut their losses in Dec seem to have done their selling to cover short positions. China Gigafactory 3 success spurs momentum for what they can do in Germany and be up and running by 2021. What I really marvel at is how each Gigafactory generation can only better and more streamlined for the next site. It is looking like super smart strategy to begin with China before executing global rollout of similar factories elsewhere.

it will all be transparent to the consumer. yes they will have showrooms. yes they will take orders. yes they can service in MI. yes they will title out of state first and then in michigan, which is STUPID, but better than nothing.
not sure if that's true if it's a transfer into state.

tesla has 3 models (S3X ) and 3 more on the way (Y, roadster, truck). they have no legacy baggage to deal with at all. they have no annoying dealers to please. they don't bother with rural areas much because there really isn't much business there. they're rapidly becoming global, with sales already in europe, asia, and north america at least.
their stock valuation is absurd, but if they can really get sales going in china, they're basically unstoppable.
