Hyundai Motor America Reports January 2020 Sales


  • Total Sales Increase 5%
  • Retail Sales Up a Significant 22%
  • Fleet Sales Down 68%; Just 6% of Total Volume


FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Feb. 3, 2020 – Hyundai Motor America reported total January sales of 42,744 units, a 5% increase in comparison with January 2019. The January sales result is the 16th time in the last 18 months that Hyundai has had increasing overall vehicle sales. Additionally, Hyundai achieved this overall sales growth while reducing its dependency on fleet sales, which were down 68% on the month and represented just 6% of total sales.

Retail Highlights

Hyundai’s retail sales grew by a substantial 22% in January. Retail gains on the month were led by Tucson (up 61%), Kona (up 3%) and more than 5,000 Palisade retail units. In total, retail SUV sales finished at 25,110 units, the best ever January total, growing 54%. SUV sales represented a 62% mix of retail volume compared with a 49% mix in January 2019. This was the seventh consecutive month exceeding 60% SUV retail mix as Hyundai’s broad SUV portfolio is connecting with consumers.

Hyundai’s eco-friendly lineup also continues to gain traction, with total green retail vehicle sales up 51% and retail sales of the Ioniq family growing 35%.

Total Volume Highlights

Hyundai SUVs set their all-time January total sales record, selling 25,861 units and growing 23% compared with January 2019. Tucson established its new January record with sales up 8%. The SUV performance represented 61% of total Hyundai sales compared with 51% in January of last year.

Sales of Hyundai’s eco-friendly vehicles performed well with total sales of all alternative-fueled vehicles increasing by 42% and Ioniq total sales up 34%.

“We started off 2020 how we finished 2019, with growing retail sales, reducing rental fleet sales and increasing market share,” said Randy Parker, vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “As the Venue arrives at dealerships in greater numbers, our reimagined SUV lineup with seven varied offerings is complete. Because of that, retail customers are gravitating in record numbers to the Hyundai SUV that best suits their needs. We are optimistic 2020 will be another solid year for auto industry sales and are confident that Hyundai is well-positioned for consistent monthly growth and market share gains.”

  • “Smaht Pahk” Big Game Commercial: Hyundai released its star-studded Big Game commercial, “Smaht Pahk,” that is a fun take on the Boston accent and the 2020 Sonata’s Remote Smart Parking Assist technology.
  • Hyundai Complimentary Maintenance: The purchase or lease of a new 2020 model year Hyundai vehicle now comes with three years of complimentary maintenance. The Hyundai Complimentary Maintenance program includes oil and filter changes plus tire rotation at normal factory-scheduled intervals for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • CES Aerial Ridesharing Partnership: Hyundai was the talk of CES where it introduced a new partnership to develop Uber Air Taxis for a future aerial ride share network and unveiled a new full-scale aircraft concept.
  • Wards 10 Best Engines: For a second year in a row, Hyundai earned two out of the ten coveted spots in the 2020 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems competition. Featured in Hyundai’s all-new Sonata sedan, the new Smartstream 1.6L Turbocharged - GDi engine and a repeat for the 2020 Kona Electric powertrain are named to this year’s list.
  • Most Fun-to-Drive Car of the Year: Cars.com awarded the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N with the 2020 Most Fun-to-Drive Car of the Year award, an accolade given annually to a model that’s defined by how fun it is to drive, on the racetrack or off.
  • Best Two-Row SUV: The 2020 Santa Fe was named the Best 2-Row SUV for the Money by U.S. News & World Report for striking the best balance between the performance, features and quality customers want.

Sales Highlights

Honda trucks captured a new January sales record as HR-V also set a new mark and Ridgeline deliveries jumped almost 60%. While the industry continues its dramatic shift toward light trucks, Honda entered 2020 by maintaining its retail market share gains with passenger cars, led by Civic with sales of 20,054 units.
  • Honda brand trucks set a new January record, gaining 2.3% on sales of 52,800 vehicles.
  • HR-V set an all-time record in January with a strong 24.8% increase on sales of 7,457 units.
  • Ridgeline sales jumped 57.1% for the month, with 3,083 deliveries.
  • CR-V started the year strong, topping 26,000 sales in January, while Civic surpassed 20,000.

Coming off a 5th straight year of record sales, Honda's light truck lineup gets its first electrified model with the launch of the all-new 2020
CR-V Hybrid early this year.



Honda is looking to extend its two-year run as the retail #1 passenger car brand in America, led by Civic, which leads the industry in sales to first-time, Millennial and Gen Z car buyers.

Sales Highlights

Acura cars found sales strength again with a 6% gain in January as the brand's gateway luxury sedan continued its segment-leading ways. The TLX sedan also rose in the first month of 2020 as buyers continue to recognize its balanced goodness.
  • ILX scored its best January sales since 2016, gaining a robust 16.1%, while TLX sales rose 6%.
  • Acura light trucks entered 2020 on a bit of a hangover after an incredible finish to 2019, but RDX and MDX still posted sales of almost 6,500 units.
Model Notes
MDX just surpassed cumulative sales of 1-million units in the U.S., continuing its run as America's best-selling 3-row luxury SUV of all-time.


Acura's gateway model, the ILX, was the retail #1 and fastest-growing model in segment with the highest percent of sales from under-35 buyers among all compact luxury sedans

Mazda Reports January Sales Results

IRVINE, Calif. (Feb. 3, 2020) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported total January sales of 23,621 vehicles, an increase of 17.8 percent compared to January 2019. With 25 selling days in January, compared to 25 the year prior, the company posted an increase of 17.8 percent on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.

Sales Highlights
  • Sales of Mazda’s crossovers, including the CX-3, CX-30, CX-5 and CX-9, increased 40.7 percent in January with 18,974 vehicles sold.
  • The CX-9 saw its best January with 2,552 vehicles sold, an increase of 37.2 percent compared to January 2019.
  • January sales of the CX-5 increased 21.2 percent compared to January 2019 with 12,908 vehicles sold.
  • January sales of the CX-3 increased 18.0 percent with 1,146 vehicles sold.
  • Sales of the all-new CX-30, which launched in November, totaled 2,368.
  • Sales of the Mazda6 increased 8.4 percent with 1,755 vehicles sold.
  • Sales of the MX-5 Miata increased 14.1 percent with 396 vehicles sold.
  • CPO sales totaled 4,665 vehicles in January, an increase of 19.8 percent compared to January 2019.
  • Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) reported January sales of 4,784 vehicles, a decrease of 6.6 percent compared to January last year.

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today announced that it will begin reporting U.S. vehicle sales results quarterly, effective immediately. Volkswagen will release first quarter sales April 1.

“The U.S. auto industry has long seen itself in 30-day cycles, but it's hard to argue anymore that a monthly snapshot offers the most effective look at our business,” said Werner Eichhorn, chief sales and marketing officer, VW, North American Region. “We believe quarterly reporting will provide a clearer, more consistent picture of brand and market performance.”

Kia sold 4,919 Tellurides in January. Surprising to see that the Sorento sold 5,470 units, but it was -18% vs. LY. For comparison, Hyundai sold 5,432 Palisades.

^^ about par for the course it seems ($5K ea). not surprised sorento is down, i think many buyers are going for t/p instead.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. After achieving its best annual sales performance in more than a decade during 2019, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today announced the brand's best January sales results since 2004. MMNA and its dealer partners reported sales of 10,626 vehicles in January, a 22 percent increase over January 2019.

  • Sales of Outlander, Mitsubishi's adventurous and enduring three-row, seven-passenger CUV, were up nearly 66 percent over January of 2019.
  • Sales of the stylish and sporty Eclipse Cross increased more than 35 percent over the January prior.
  • Mitsubishi Motors reported its seventh-straight year of sales increases in 2019, marking a 2.5 percent increase over the year prior, with sales of 121,046 vehicles.
  • 2019 was Mitsubishi Motors' third-straight year of 100,000-plus sales.

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 46,285 vehicle sales for January 2020, a 0.5 percent increase compared to January 2019, and the best January in the history of the company. These results continue the automaker’s sales momentum from 2019 where Subaru achieved eleven consecutive years of record sales and exceeded 700,000 annual sales – a first in company history.

January marked the 71st consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. Ascent achieved its best January ever with 5,606 vehicle sales. Outback posted a 4 percent increase, while Legacy posted a 2.8 percent increase compared to January 2019. Sources could be wrong, but many reports state that Kia cannot keep up with the demand on the Telluride. Just last week, there was an article about Kia increasing production by an additional 100,000 units per year for Telluride. This monthly number appears soft, but I believe that both the Telluride and Palisade are simply limited due to supply constraints.

the shutdown in China due to virus is way too recent to result in part shortages that can affect cars available for sale in the U.S. in January ...
