CR is the only publication that can be trusted for reliability data as they accept no advertising $ and purchase all of their vehicles to-be-tested, without the manufacturers in the loop. Too, they don't allow their name to be used in auto advertising. JD Powers is a shill for the automakers as there whole business model seems to be selling their name and awards for advertising purposes.

CR's best rating is their customer satisfaction rating. Some cars with very high customer satisfaction ratings are generally the more reliable cars, but not always. The converse is true as well. The key is find the vehicles with top marks in both categories. As one might expect, Toyota/Lexus generally leads the pack.

I can only comment on my experiences. The genesis is a nice car. I, however, only drive used cars. My daily driver is an 08 IS350 that still looks and drives like new. It has needed a water pump, oil, gas, and tires.

My fun car is a 13 ISF. It has needed oil, gas, and tires.

i feel reliability can’t be rated until cars have had a chance to be reliable. A 3-5 year old car is still new in my sight, and barely tested. Even many garbage, throw away cars will run fine for that period of time.

Let’s check back in on the Genesis in 10 years and see where it sits. I’m betting I’d still choose my current cars, which will be around 2 decades old then.

In all fairness though, both my cars were designed before the 08 recession. I think they are built better than even brand new Lexus mid grade vehicles.

Smile I'd gladly pay less for a comparable Lexus model!

"Would people really pay the same money for a Lexus compared to what they pay for a Genesis?"

Let me be the first to say that I would gladly pay less for a comparable Lexus model than for the comparable Genesis model.

I've been reading this site for 12 months now and my internal debate is this thread's headline: Lexus vs Genesis.

Test drove a 2018 G80 3.3t and really enjoyed it, especially for the price and features. However, my current debate (and debate now with my wife) is the G80 3.3t or a 2016-2017 GSF. I'm finding some decently priced GSF's in my area, however, it's hard to pull the trigger on one quickly without seeing them in person and traveling to the dealership. I know when I drive a GSF what I will want, but a used 2019 G80 3.3t has more technology and updated features (cough - infotainment system in all 4th gen GS models) than the 2016 or 2017 GSF. WAY different engine though...

I am only certain of one thing, reliability on both is outstanding.

CR rates the GS reliability at 87% and the G80 at 75. Too, the G80 data only goes back three years because it is a relatively new model. My prediction is the G80's reliability numbers will drop as it ages to seven years, while we already know the GS is at 87% after seven years. I'd bet on the sure thing--the Lexus!

I'm in the same boat. 1992 SC400 (second vehicle) and 2006 GS430. Both still drive flawlessly and have had next to no repairs beyond normal maintenance and age related items. Hard feat for any car.

Well then since I'm here, 4th gen GS F Sport or 2016 / 2017 GSF? I can afford the GSF, but wonder if I should spend the extra $10-15k in the used car market. Reliability is nearly equal from what I gather outside of tires and brakes for the GSF.

GS-F all the way. I'd go for a 2017 over a 2016 as the GS-F got the Adaptive Variable Suspension starting with the 2017 model year. 2016s had non-adaptive fixed suspensions.

From my limited understanding, I believe JD power classifies minor issues on the same level as major issues like transmission failure, and as a result it isn’t exactly the most accurate test, although Genesis is certainly very reliable.

Default Genesis?

I've read and evaluated all of the conversation on this thread, that said I would be more than happy to put up my 1995 LS400 against ALL auto manufacturers/models/and etc and not one of them would beat me in terms of reliability. I've even developed a nickname for it: Beast Mode

Not sure I agree with this, both CR and JDP numbers typically tend to see reliability go UP as models get late in the lifecycle, as major issues tend to get worked out, less bugs, etc. Could argue that the GS is high due to the extremely long lifecycle it has had with even older mechanicals etc. Whereas the Genesis is about to be replaced already (Has been out since 2015MY overall under the Hyundai brand).

Genesis/Hyundai get ZERO points for style. Even less for prestige.

I think many of their models are very good looking. As for “prestige”, I dunno. They had a crowd at the car show.
