Default Geneva Auto Show: Cancelled Due To Coronavirus Fears

Of course, public health is more important than displaying new cars. I wonder what else is going to be canceled? Or is canceled that just isn't as newsworthy?

Geneva Auto Show: Cancelled Due To Coronavirus Fears

Neil Winton Contributor The Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) said it was cancelling the annual exhibition after consultation with the Swiss government.

A spokesperson answering Forbes questions on the telephone, said the show was called off Friday morning after talking to health authorities about the impact of the coronavirus.

Media events were scheduled to start Monday, including the European Car of the Year announcement. Official media days are March 3 and March 4. The show was to open to the public March 5 through 15 at the Palexpo exhibition center.

The Swiss government earlier said it banned large events expected to draw more than 1,000 people as an extraordinary measure to curb the new coronavirus epidemic.

“In view of the current situation and the spread of the coronavirus, the Federal Council has categorized the situation in Switzerland as ‘special’ in terms of the Epidemics Act,” the cabinet said after a meeting.

“Large-scale events involving more than 1,000 people are to be banned. The ban comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until 15 March.”

I think we're going to see LOADS of major events canceled. and pretty soon loads of people won't want to go to large public events anyway. Japan just closed all its schools.

They are doing everything they can to stop the virus spreading so that the Summer Olympics will not get cancelled ... that’s the biggie

Hmmm............I think that when it come to a big auto show, I'd rather take my chances.....wear a mask if I had to.

In fact, one of the largest shows (New York) is planned in just five or six weeks. And the Detroit show itself is moved to June this year.

Good luck with that.
"The fact is, your typical surgical mask is not going to protect or prevent infection," Erin Sorrell, a Center for Global Health Science and Security member and assistant research professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University, told BuzzFeed News.

Sorrell said there's no reason to use a surgical mask if you're healthy and not infected.

"The virus itself is so small that it can penetrate the mask," she said. "So it literally does nothing for you."

This is why they cancel events. There's lots of misinformation and assumptions out there, and people who just think "Oh, I won't get infected". I read today that a PR firm did poll, and 38% of respondents said they wouldn't drink Corona beer (I'm really hoping they were just messing with the pollsters).

There's BIG money behind the Olympics...even more so than the big auto shows, which pale in comparison. It would take a LOT of pressure to cancel or delay the Olympics....they have been going on for millennia.

It's true that a virus is so tiny a mask wouldn't do much, but I think the whole point is that the viri ride on droplets that spray out with a sneeze, and THOSE can be mostly caught with a mask.

I think this thing will eventually spread to pretty much everywhere; the question in my mind is whether it does it in the next month or whether spring and summer kill off the opportunity for spreading, as what usually happens with the cold and the flu. And hopefully we have a shot for this thing before it hits again next winter.

On the news they say (1) Cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands, (2) Use those hand sanitizers frequently, (3) Never ever take your hands up to your face where they can touch eyes, nose, or mouth. Just like my mom used to say 60 years ago.

The problem with that is that after a short time, the mask becomes damp, and then the virus can become drawn through as you breathe. Also assumes you never ever touch the mask, and dispose of it properly. Oh and you also have to wear goggles that seal around your eyes.

The general consensus is that the masks are pretty much only useful if infected people wear them, they do a good job of preventing the spread. But they are marginally effective at best when worn by non-infected people. Remember surgeons wear masks to protect the patient, not themselves.

Considering not a single credible outlet has suggested this has any likelihood to happen, I'm not going to hold out hope that it will.

I will ask my wife about it. She's amongst the top scientists in Switzerland in the field of virology. As you can imagine, she's literally sleeping at work since a few days but I plan to see her tomorrow evening.

I could ask her your question if the corona is behaving like the flu in regard of the temperature and air humidity.

And yes, I confirm, the mask should be on the infected person, because he's much more helpful there than on the peoples around.

.
Very interesting stuff. I’m always amazed how people step up to the plate. My mother contracted SARS when the outbreak hit. It hit Toronto during that time.

Okay. I was able to ask. The Virus will very probably not be killed off by spring nor summer. Also, if it's true that flu find better conditions to spread in the winter times, it is also active during summer time on a less larger scale. Some regions have flu outbreaks the whole year around.

The Covid-19 has a lot of research to undergo before beeing perfectly known, so it can't be said for sure that he will not die off in summer. Whatever, his corona brothers of other types, like the flu, can spread in spring and summer conditions, so chances are high that this one will behave like his brothers too.
