- All-time February Total Sales Records for Tucson, Kona, SUVs and Ioniq

- Fleet Sales Down 20%

Mar 03, 2020, 09:00 ET

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America reported total February sales of 53,013 units, a 16% increase in comparison with February 2019 and the highest February sales in Hyundai history, outpacing the previous record of February 2016. The February sales result is the 17th time in the last 19 months that Hyundai has had increasing overall vehicle sales. Additionally, Hyundai achieved this overall sales growth while continuing to reduce its dependency on fleet sales, which were down 20% on the month and represented 15% of total sales.
"February was the second straight month with retail sales growing more than 20%, a remarkable achievement that speaks to the consumer response to Hyundai's products and the efforts of our dealer partners," said Randy Parker, vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. "The recent launches of the all-new Palisade, Sonata and Venue are resonating with customers and validating their status as segment-defining vehicles. Moving forward, we continue to work collaboratively with Hyundai Motor Company to monitor the global coronavirus situation to ensure the safety of our employees and maintain a robust supply of Hyundai vehicles to the U.S. market, which are built both domestically in Alabama and abroad."

Retail Highlights
Hyundai's retail sales grew by a substantial 26% in February, establishing a new February record. Retail gains on the month were led by Tucson (up 58%), Kona (up 16%) and a record-setting 6,953 Palisade retail units. In total, retail SUV sales finished at 28,418 units, the best-ever February total, growing 57%. SUV sales represented a 63% mix of retail volume, the eighth consecutive month exceeding 60%.

While SUVs continue to drive much of Hyundai's retail gains, Sonata achieved a 12% increase in sales driven almost entirely by the all-new 2020 model, indicating consumers are attracted to its styling, driving dynamics and technology features.

Hyundai's eco-friendly lineup also continues to gain traction, with total hybrid, plug-in, electric and fuel cell retail vehicle sales increasing 49%.

Total Volume Highlights
Hyundai set a new record for February sales with growth across the entire lineup. SUVs set their all-time February total sales record, selling 32,059 units, increasing 28% compared with February 2019.

Vehicles with increasing total sales included Accent (up 14%), Elantra (up 1%), Tucson (up 2%), Ioniq (up 44%), Kona (up 25%) and Nexo (up 460%).

"These are challenging times for our industry and the world, so it's gratifying to see our sales grow in February, led by strong demand for Honda light trucks, and Civic sales gains demonstrating once again that cars still matter," said Steven Center, Vice President, Auto Sales Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "We will continue to maintain a disciplined approach to the market, focusing on the strength of our products rather than steep discounts, with the introduction this month of the CR-V Hybrid signaling the continued growth of our electrified vehicle lineup."

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

Hot on the heels of record February sales, Honda trucks gained an important new family member on March 1 with the launch of the 2020 CR-V Hybrid—Honda’s first electrified CUV.
  • Honda trucks gained 6.6% for best February sales: CR-V rose 7.5%, HR-V set a new record with sales up 14.4%, Ridgeline climbed 46.8%, Odyssey led its segment; and Passport posted an all-time best February, combining with stablemate Pilot to match Feb. 2019 sales.

  • Honda’s hybrid sedans—Accord and Insight—both gained in February, with Accord Hybrid up 10.7% and Insight gaining 1.6% for the month.

Model Notes
Honda leads the industry in retail sales to under-35-year-olds over the past decade, with Civic and Accord the #1 and #2 cars, CR-V the #1 CUV and Odyssey the #1 minivan.
CR-V is a perennial best seller, the overall #1 CUV in America over the past 23 years, and now adds the all-new CR-V Hybrid.

BRAND REPORT

Sales Highlights

The 1-2 punch of MDX and RDX delivered a February record for Acura trucks, with RDX itself setting a new February mark, while Acura cars led gains for the brand.
  • February sales of 4,982 units put RDX back in the record books and Acura’s stalwart MDX delivered 3,858 sales—the two combining for a new Acura February truck sales record.
  • ILX led gains for Acura in February, with a 3.4% gain on sales of 1,083 units—it’s best February since 2016.
  • TLX also gained for the month, up 2.2% on sales of 2,263 vehicles.

Model Notes
Every Acura core model offers an A-Spec appearance package, which attract more than twice the under 35 year old buyers as non A-Spec models.
More than 99% of all Acuras sold in the U.S. are made in America, with five of the brand’s six models built at the company’s three Ohio auto assembly plants.
