A bit silly of the automakers to do this for such a serious issue as the need for social distancing.

they are doing it because it is serious, and they're trying to get the message out in a unique way

Maybe it'll work. My initial reaction was "Really?", since I thought it undermined the seriousness of the need for social distancing. Sure, you're changing your logos. But how are you taking care of your employees? How are you setting an example for what people should do to stop the spread of COVID-19?

Only the company or an employee could answer that. I would venture a guess that they are practicing what they preach. Things like keeping a six foot distance from people, signs posted everywhere emphasizing this, keeping some doors open as to not have to grab and open them, spacing seats / work stations, work fewer days, utilize 'skeleton crews' to maintain basic operations etc.. I base this off what BMW is doing.
