“There will be challenging days ahead as this very serious public health crisis continues, but with consumer traffic beginning to increase online and at Honda and Acura dealerships, we are approaching the coming weeks with guarded optimism,” said Steven Center, vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We value the actions of our Honda associates and dealers as we work to align our business with changing market conditions, and we are now turning our attention to creating momentum for a broader recovery.”

BRAND REPORTS
Sales

Sales of Honda and Acura vehicles showed signs of improvement in the final weeks of April, with customer traffic increasing online and in dealer showrooms as state and local authorities eased restrictions on sales activities.
  • Honda and Acura dealers continue to focus on taking care of existing customers through vehicle service, maintenance and repair, while preserving the health and safety of their customers and employees.
  • A number of Honda and Acura dealers remained closed for much of April in compliance with mandates imposed on businesses by state and local authorities.
  • Last month, Honda and Acura opened enrollment in new online retailing programs, Shop Simple with Honda and Acura Precision Purchase, and received a tremendous response from Honda and Acura dealers looking for an online retailing solution to meet the needs of our customers.
  • Honda is providing an industry-first special offer for first responders and medical professionals, out of respect for their contribution to communities across the country.
COVID-19 Response Initiatives

Honda has initiated a significant and comprehensive new effort to harness the spirit of community in responding to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific initiatives include:
  • Honda has teamed up with Dynaflo, Inc. to produce diaphragm compressors, a key component of portable ventilators that are used in hospitals and by first responders to help COVID-19 patients. The companies aim to produce 10,000 compressors per month once production reaches capacity.
  • Honda associates have been using 3D printers to produce face shields at various company operations, with Honda engineers now working on a method to mass-produce face shield frames in Honda facilities.
  • As the COVID-19 pandemic can add financial stress to the lives of our customers, Honda and Acura have offered to help customers who have financed their vehicle through Honda Financial Services or Acura Financial Services with payment extensions and deferrals, as well as available late fee waivers.
  • Honda has pledged $1.0 million to address food insecurity in communities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, providing the most vulnerable with access to food.
  • Additional projects and contributions are in the works, check Hondanews.com for updates.

May 1, 2020 , Camden, N.J. -

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS APRIL 2020 SALES

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 30,620 vehicle sales for April 2020, a 47 percent decrease compared with April 2019. These results reflect the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the resulting retailer shutdowns that have impacted the entire automobile industry. Following eleven consecutive years of sales records, Subaru reported year-to-date sales of 161,211, a 25 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2019.

“While this pandemic has been difficult for the auto industry, April sales for Subaru were better than expected,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America. “We are immensely proud of our retailers’ efforts and perseverance in this difficult market. Through our partnership with Feeding America®, Subaru and our retailers have also come together to provide
50 million meals* nationwide to assist those having difficulty accessing and purchasing food. We want to thank our retailers for their participation in this initiative, making them more than a typical car dealer.”

“April sales are reflective of the current state of the automotive industry during an unprecedented time, but our customer’s confidence in the quality and capability of Subaru vehicles remains as strong as ever. Awards like Kelley Blue Book naming Subaru the ‘
Most Trusted Brand’ of 2020 are more important now than they ever have been,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “Our retailers continue to provide safe car-buying environments and expand methods of vehicle service, in addition to continuing to care for their local communities.”

Coronavirus pandemic tanks US auto sales in April

Key Points
  • The coronavirus pandemic caused drastic declines in U.S. auto sales in April, according to industry data.
  • Automakers such as Toyota and Honda reported sales last month were cut in half compared with April 2019.
  • The industry was expected to sell about 633,000 vehicles in April — the lowest number in decades.

The coronavirus pandemic caused drastic declines in U.S. auto sales in April, according to industry data released Friday.

Automakers such as Toyota Motor and Honda Motor reported sales last month were cut in half compared with April 2019, as dealerships across the country were forced to limit or close showrooms and consumers stayed away due to stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders.

Toyota and Honda led the declines with sales plummeting about 54% each last month. Hyundai Motor reported a 39% drop in its U.S. sales, while sister company Kia Motors reported a 38.3% decline compared with a year ago. Mazda Motor said sales declined 44.5% for the month. Subaru reported sales slid 46.6%.

The reported sales provide some perspective on the industry; the numbers were expected to decline about 53% in April, according to auto research firms Edmunds and *** Automotive. The industry was expected to sell about 633,000 vehicles in April — the lowest amount in decades, according to Edmunds.

AutoData, which crunches monthly auto sales, says the pace of auto sales in April, at 8.6 million vehicles, was the lowest monthly sales rate since the firm started calculating the data in 1980.

General Motors, Ford Motor and other major automakers in recent years switched from monthly sales reports to quarterly reports, so their monthly numbers are forecasted.

Why one of the nation’s largest car dealers says sales have been improving in recent weeks
Despite sales being down 53.9% in April, Toyota said its dealers’ sales of 84,696 vehicles surpassed its forecast of about 50,000 for the month.

J.D. Power previously reported U.S. auto sales last month rebounded faster than initially expected when states started enacting stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders. The firm reports 24 states, which represent 44% of 2019 retail sales, allowed dealerships to remain open. The other 26 states, which represent 56% of retail sales, are allowing only online or remote sales.

When states initially started enacting the orders, some banned all sales, even online. Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Hawaii were the last states to remove bans on all sales last month.

Big incentives from automakers, record 0% financing offers and all states now allowing at least online vehicle sales contributed to the better-than-expected sales, according to officials.

“It’s a buyer’s market,” Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds’ executive director of insights, said. “And while there aren’t a lot of buyers right now, those in a position to purchase a new vehicle are taking advantage of the most generous financing programs we’ve seen this century.”

Automakers and industry analysts have drastically lowered their sales expectations for the year due to the coronavirus. J.D. Power expects U.S. auto sales this year of about 12.6 million to 14.5 million vehicles, down from an estimated 16.8 million prior to the pandemic.
