Default License Plate Surcharge for Hybrid/Electric Vehicles

Ohio recently increased annual license plate registration fees by $100 for hybrid and $200 for electric vehicles. Apart from those fees, plates are here relatively cheap. Fees vary by county, but are typically around $60 for standard plates.

The fees for my wife's '16 RAV4 hybrid were $186.42 with the hybrid surcharge and her having personalized plates.

Trying to make up for the decreased gas taxes that they can collect on hybrids, none on electric vehicles obviously. Not sure what other annual taxes Ohio places on vehicles, but it has to be better than the annual property tax that gets levied on all vehicles here in Virginia!

I'm not sure what Washington state adds on for BEVs, but I believe it's $75 here for hybrids. Our tabs here are rather ridiculous. Between $700 and $800 on the Highlander and my GS. The tabs for my new Tacoma were $600. It goes down a few percent each year.

The increase is completely reasonable to offset gas tax which may be about $200 per year in your state. Probably even a little more than what a typical person pays in state gas tax. I pay about $150 more per year in California for EV related tax for registration. Keep in mind this probably completely offsets losing out on ICE related taxes for the state vs. EV and in the end, the EV will save a ton more because electricity is cheaper than gas everywhere.

I don't like the PP tax either, but we have it in VA because the State Constitution does not allow counties to levy income-taxes, so the real-estate and PP taxes generally take its place. Incorporated towns and cities in VA can, and sometimes do, levy income taxes. Virginia is the only state in the country that has incorporated cities and towns that are legally separate from counties.

I don't think that is true, in Florida and NY the cities are separate from the counties. There are no towns in Florida which is strange but it does eliminate another level of bureaucracy that residents pay for. I'm not aware of any EV surcharges in Florida yet. In looking at the list of surcharges I do note a Goat truck costs $7.50 extra.

No such surcharges in Florida. We actually used to get more benefits from EV/Hybrid vehicles like avoiding tolls through the placement of a sticker on the rear of such vehicles, but now such sticker applies to only a few roadways in the state, I-95 in Miami-Dade being one.

I'm not sure what your point is. You quoted Incorporated cities in your post. This wikipedia reference calls the cities Independent. Virginia can call them what they want but they are all basically the same with Mayors, city councils, police forces and their own budgets separate from the counties they are in. What am I missing?
