Tundra 3UR-FE
#16
Before I sold in 2016, I had my 2009 Tundra DC SR5 5.7 (bought new) primarily setup for towing with remote Firestone air bags, Prodigy controller, swapped for TRD wheels and added e-rated tires. Added tint, the TRD sway bar, bed step, hard folding cover. I did some updates from upper trim models with homelink mirror, glass break sensor, underseat storage and added a blendmount for my hardwired V1, put on OEM backup camera which I connected to a Pioneer Nav setup.
Loved the Tundra. Rock solid, drove like a car more than a truck. Problem was we tow with it a lot and gas towing MPG (7 - 10 mpg) and the small gas tank size got tiring having to stop all the time so replaced it with a GMC Diesel.
Early picture when I first got it - can tell since it's with the SR5 wheels which I swapped pretty quickly.

I've never heard complaints about the 5.7. I don't care that it's a gas guzzler. Gas is cheap. We personally don't put many miles on our cars anyway.
Our next vehicle will be powered by this motor, I'm looking forward to it. It's not quickest in class but like I said I've not heard any complaints that it's not enough.

i searched but didn't see any somewhat recent posts or interests on tundra's. anyone else here got love (or hate) for the gas guzzling, low mpg tundra's? lol. they're getting rid of the 3UR-FE 5.7L and moving to a tt v6
this is my 08 i've had since new. trd supercharged at 29k miles and it has 83k now. i thought about buying a new one but it's the same platform from 07-20 and they no longer make the trd branded supercharger. so i've been away from the rc f for a bit refreshing the tundra. added a fox stage 4 lift, trd big brake kit, amp power steps and complete 9 spkr jl and kenwood audio upgrade. fell back in love with it after 12 yrs of ownership. led headlights and a more modern grill are next.
the tundra and rc f are powerful and fast enough for me so my plan is to keep both v8's until i croak...maybe another 30yrs? lol.
anyone else into trucks?

last ski season i got stuck 200 miles from home with a flat and no full sized spare. had to get towed, ditch the truck at firestone b/c no one carries my tire size in stock, rent a car, take the kids skiing then p/u truck on way home. bs! never again. this thing is cool.

GOOD LOOKING RIG, SENSAI!
Wish I had your SC in my Tundra. I am sure it's a blast. Your Rig is getting fancy every time you post.
I do have a turbo in my Ford E350 Super Duty Van. But I do enjoy driving it. Nothing like a Tundra, but it can tow a house down the street and up the hill! lol
*** I use to have a Gary Fisher Mtn bike, brings back memories. Also Can you see your 6:00 through your camera w/ that spare tire?

May I get some feedback on the 5.7?
I don't need a term paper but I'd love to hear it from some of you guys. Short and sweet is fine. My next vehicle will have this motor.
It's an old V8 and not class leading power wise, and dated, but I never hear anyone complaining about this V8 other than mileage (which I don't care about). I read a recent MT or C&D test where they tested a 6100lb spec'd out Tundra...0-60 in 6.4 seconds.
I also read a C&D article on a 2015 6200lb LX570....0-60 in 6.5. That is certainly nothing to scoff at.
I take it its a plenty oomphy motor? Does not need to rev out too much to get going smoothly? Fun to rag out?

From what i've heard it's pretty solid, had some issues out of the gate back in 07-08 but should be reliable now, if a bit thirsty.
The one thing I've always wondered is why an engine with 381/400 needs 4.30 gears to run with the competition in acceleration or towing.

I believe it's because Tundras have a 6 speed as opposed to a 10 speed transmission. The 4.10 gearing works pretty damn well with that set up. Toyota as a whole doesn't make big changes to each models. Case in point, The Tundra has the same engine, transmission since 2007. If anything that's why they are so damn reliable.
No disrespect, but in a 1/2 ton truck platform, I would not own anything else but a Toyota. Now a 3/4 or 1 ton pick-up truck is a whole different story.
