He was trying really hard to be positive, but you know it's not a good impression when the best he has to say about the car is "it's a lot of fun" and "I'll have to sleep on it before I come to a decision".

Depends on the angle, it's doesn't look any worse than say an A4

Audis are FWD-biased too. I'm not making an excuse for them. But since the TLX is the same size as an A6, here's a more fair comparison:

damning with faint praise.

Car and Driver and Motor Trend both wrote pretty positive reviews, in particular praising the handling.
they need ads.

Physically the new TLX now matches better with other premium/luxury midsize sedans, but the pricing is still straddling entry level. Acura seems to be going the Cadillac CTS route with this 'tweener'. I suspect the ILX has plenty of room to grow if another generation is planned.

2021 TLX 194.6in $38,525
2020 TLX 190.7in $33,000
2020 ILX 182.2in $25,900
2021 330i 185.7 $41,250
2021 A4 187.5in $39,100
2021 A6 194.4in $54,900
2021 530i 195.8in $55,195

Point was, the Audi's are more apples to apples with Acura when we're comparing FWD derived chassis and stellar AWD systems.

I feel like the Stinger would be a good car to compare this too. And as much as I do like this TLX, I would take the Stinger over it.

Except that Acura themselves claimed that they were going for RWD proportions, which is why the cabin space is so compromised in favor of that elongated hood. However, they still ended up making it look FWD, so the sacrifice of cabin space is a slap in the face.

Stinger is about 4 or 5 inches shorter around the same size as the Q50, the TLX is very clearly in the midsize category from its external dimensions and weight. Only reason we're calling it a tweener is because the cabin is compact.

I don't think those 4 or 5 inches will stop people from comparing the two.

IMO the back half of the car looks like it could be RWD, the front still looks FWD.

Its misleading to go on exterior length. The car seems inefficient for packaging.

2021 TLX interior volume 93.4 cubic feet
2020 BMW 5 series interior volume is 98.8 cubic feet
2020 Model 3 interior volume 97 cubic feet

Its not really any bigger inside than a 3 series on the inside.

I don't think there's anything misleading about discussing exterior length, nor did I say it correlates with interior volume. Merely showing the size of the car for the price. I agree packaging is inefficient, but then so are many modern cars that aren't EV's

Agree but I was just making the point that Acura really markets this as a 3 series competitor and its because interior dimensions are much more in-line with that class of vehicle. To give credit to Acura, they never claimed it was a midsize premium car and has maintained that its an entry level 3 series competitor. The only reason i benchmarked the Model 3 is the 3 series is very similar in terms of interior dimensions and i couldn't find the 3 series interior volume as they don't use that metric. I do know that it seems its about the same though so the 3 series is actually a pretty large car and probably has more interior volume than the TLX. I'm actually surprised that the new TLXonly has 0.1 cubic feet more than the 2020 version.
