FCA Q2 2020 Sales Chart (pdf)
  • Retail sales on rebound since April as consumers remain resilient
    • More than 98 percent of U.S. dealer network selling vehicles online

July 1, 2020 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC reported second-quarter sales of 367,086 vehicles – a 39 percent decline over the same period a year earlier – as the economic havoc caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in April was partially offset by the stronger than expected retail sales rebound in May and June.

Fleet sales were impacted in the quarter as customers initially delayed or reduced their orders, in addition as production restarted deliveries have been focused on the dealer channel.

"This quarter demonstrated the resilience of the U.S. consumer," said Head of U.S. Sales Jeff Kommor. "Retail sales have been rebounding since April as the reopening of the economy, steady gas prices and access to low interest loans spur people to buy. Our fleet volume remained low during the quarter as we prioritized vehicle deliveries to retail customers. As a result, we have built a strong fleet order book, which we will fulfill over the coming months."

This was also the first quarter consumers could completely purchase their vehicles online through the company’s new Online Retailing Experience (
ORE). ORE is accessible through the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, Ram, FIAT and Alfa Romeo websites, participating dealer sites and a variety of social media applications. Customers simply click on the link to begin the process.

About 20 percent of new sales leads now come from online retailing compared with about 1 percent a year earlier.

“ORE is another tool dealers can now use to reach those consumers who like shopping from their home computer," Kommor said.

See the attached table for the breakdown of brand and nameplate sales.

Unhappy Subaru Goes Quarterly

https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/20...ou-too-subaru/

Not You Too, Subaru!

By Steph Willems on July 1, 2020

Everyone’s doing it, and now it seems Subaru has joined the maddening crowd of sales reporting conformity.

Not long ago, Subaru, like most every other automaker, reported its sales totals on a monthly basis. And why wouldn’t it? The previous decade saw the brand’s popularity expand massively in the U.S., with volume up not on an annual basis, but on a monthly, year-over-year basis. It pulled off the latter feat 93 consecutive times.

Alas, times change.

As reported by
Automotive News ahead of Wednesday’s June sales results, Subaru will join the herd in switching to quarterly sales reporting. Frankly, we blame Ford for kicking off the trend, more or less.

Yes, analysts will tell you how quarterly reports provide a more accurate measure of an automaker’s performance, but it annoys us just the same. After the June report, the next Subaru sales update will be on October 1st, then January 1st, and so on. The exception has now become the norm, with only Toyota, Honda, Hyundai/Kia, and Mazda still choosing to update the public on a monthly basis. Volvo, too.

And who knows how long that will last.

Last month, Subaru of America CEO Tom Doll stated the brand’s
new prediction for 2020, which — unsurprisingly — is not the lofty, record figure quoted at the outset of the year. Through the end of May, Subaru’s year-to-date sales were down 23 percent in the United States as a result of pandemic-related lockdowns. If monthly reporting is really all about telegraphing your brand’s strengths to the media, then Subaru clearly doesn’t see as much good news going forward.

That said, May’s sales were down only 19 percent on a year-over-year basis, which was better than the industry as a whole. Sales of the Forester and WRX were actually up on a year-over-year basis, with the Forester figure setting a new May record for the model.

  • Demand for full-size pickup trucks was resilient
  • Results reflect pandemic’s effect on demand and tight inventories
  • All truck and full-size SUV plants returned to three shifts in U.S.; deliveries of redesigned portfolio of full-size SUVs underway
DETROIT General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced today that it delivered 492,489 vehicles in the second quarter of 2020, a decrease in total vehicle sales of about 34 percent compared to a year ago with demand outpacing supply in the latter half of the quarter. While the industry experienced significant declines due to the outbreak of COVID-19, full-size pickup truck sales performed exceptionally well, and overall sales showed signs of recovery, especially deliveries to retail customers.

“Our resilient sales reflect an improving demand curve, and the strong efforts of GM and our retailers in unprecedented times,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations. “GM entered the quarter with very lean inventories and our dealers did a great job meeting customer demand, especially for pickups. Now, we are refilling the pipeline by quickly and safely returning production to pre-pandemic levels. Having an appropriate mix of the right vehicles combined with the benefits of enhanced shopping technologies such as Shop. Click. Drive., positions us for success in the second half of 2020.”

Retail sales were off by about 24 percent in the quarter, roughly in line with the industry. Retail sales in April were down the most in the quarter, off by about 35 percent compared to last year, but recovered significantly in May and June with year-over-year declines of around 20 percent or less.

Availability of models on dealer lots is expected to start growing now that most manufacturing assembly plants have returned to normal operating levels. U.S. pickup truck and full-size SUV plants returned to three shifts and nearly all car and crossover plants returned to the same number of shifts as pre-pandemic levels.

The majority of GM’s U.S. plants, including all truck and SUV plants, will continue to operate during the traditional two-week summer shutdown.

Additionally, the majority of GM’s increasing output will be devoted to restocking retail channels with capacity made available by lower rental volumes.

To grow inventory as rapidly as possible, GM is collaborating with logistics and trucking companies to ensure vehicles are shipping as soon as they are produced. The company is well positioned with both strong empty railcar supply and haul-away capacity to respond quickly and enable the flow of new vehicles to dealers.

Although the economy has a long way to go from a very low base, vehicle sales responded strongly in May to the expiration of many stay-at-home orders, observed GM Chief Economist, Elaine Buckberg.

“After falling into a deep recession in March, the U.S. economy has begun to recover as it reopens. Auto sales are benefiting from historically low interest rates that make now an attractive time to buy a vehicle for many customers. We expect continued sales recovery as businesses ramp back up, but recognize that the path forward may not be linear, as rising infections in many states may lead to steps backward in the reopening process,” said Buckberg.

The company’s most recent crossover launches continued their momentum in the quarter. Since the Chevrolet Blazer launched in January 2019, sales have been steadily increasing, and are up 68 percent year over year in the second quarter. The all-new Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX have been performing well in a highly competitive segment. They’ve been gaining retail market share every month since launch and combined, have captured more than 10 percent of the small SUV segment according to the latest J.D. Power PIN data. Next to launch is GM’s portfolio of full-size SUVs, including the redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade, now available with enhanced Super Cruise.

In the U.S., GM established a voluntary CLEAN program for dealers to give customers greater confidence to safely return to showrooms and service lanes. Participating dealers agree to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and use Environmental Protection Agency-approved cleansers in their facilities and vehicles. Woodcliff Lake, NJ – July 1, 2020… BMW of North America announced today Q2 2020 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S. For the sales period ending June 30, 2020, BMW brand sales totaled 50,957 vehicles, a decrease of 39.3% vs the 83,976 vehicles sold in the same time period last year.* MINI brand sales totaled 5,288 vehicles, a decrease of 41.5% vs the 9,044 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2019.*

Since the onset of the global pandemic in the U.S. in mid-March, BMW has instituted a number of measures to sell and service vehicles across the U.S. While the situation has differed greatly from state-to-state, at many locations, BMW has accelerated its use of digital sales practices, allowing customers to move further down the path to purchase online before visiting a store, and enabled virtual transactions so that purchases may be completed digitally and vehicles delivered. Dealers are also offering “invisible” service where vehicles in need of service or maintenance are picked up and dropped off without interaction.

“While automotive sales in the U.S. continue to be impacted by the ongoing global pandemic, the situation has provided an opportunity to institute new practices and find new ways to better serve our customers,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, president and CEO, BMW of North America. “As a result of these efforts and with the great partnership of our dealers, we have seen an increase in sales over each month of the quarter, which gives us reason to be cautiously optimistic for the second half of the year. As we continue to navigate these uncertain waters, we will always prioritize the health, safety and well-being of our employees, dealers and customers.”

“Despite a steep decline in the luxury market, Genesis increased sales significantly over last month. As the market recovers, I am confident that Genesis is well-positioned to garner a lot more attention in the second half of the year, said Mark Del Rosso, President and Chief Executive Officer, Genesis Motor North America.

Last week, J.D. Power’s 2020 Initial Quality Study (IQS) ranked Genesis #1 among all premium automotive brands for the fourth consecutive year. As the #1 premium brand in the study, Genesis vehicle owners experienced 17 fewer problems per 100 vehicles than the second best luxury brand and 24 fewer problems than the average new 2020 vehicle owner that responded to the survey from JD Power.

The 2020 G70, scored at 129 PP100, was ranked the #1 Compact Premium Car for the second consecutive year. Genesis G70 owners experienced 32 fewer problems per 100 vehicles than the #2 compact premium car and 45 fewer problems per 100 vehicles than the compact premium car segment average.

“With every major accomplishment Genesis achieves as a brand; #1 Premium IQS brand for the fourth consecutive year, #1 overall brand in the J.D. Power 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), Consumer Reports Annual Report Card Results, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for our entire model range, all of the major third party awards our vehicles win, relatively solid and stable sales results through these trying times, and so on, Genesis is maturing into a luxury automobile brand to be reckoned with,” said Mark Del Rosso, President and Chief Executive Officer, Genesis Motor North America. “Furthermore, none of these major accomplishments are unique, one-off events. With each major award or accolade, Genesis is proving itself as the brand to watch in the automotive sector.”

Mitsubishi Motors reports second quarter 2020 sales

ShareFRANKLIN, Tenn. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) today reported second-quarter 2020 sales of 12,197 vehicles, down 58 percent over the same period of 2019. Calendar year-to-date sales through the end of June totaled 47,760 vehicles, a decrease of 33 percent compared with the same period in 2019.

News and Notes
  • State and local restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic caused sales to be stopped in many dealerships across the country early in the quarter. Since then, retail sales are approaching pre-COVID levels, with a decrease in available fleet sales impacting total volumes
  • Mitsubishi Motors was the highest-ranked Japanese brand, placed sixth overall, and saw the greatest year-over-year improvement in ranking in the recent J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). Additionally, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport tied for third in Small SUV category.
    • Following last year's relocation to Franklin, Tenn., MMNA is ready to move into its permanent headquarters, once COVID-19-related restrictions ease. The state-of-the-art space and long-term lease are the most tangible demonstration of MMNA’s ongoing plan to reinvigorate its presence and vehicle offerings in the U.S. marketplace.
      • Since the relocation, Mitsubishi has hired more than 140 new employee team members, with 23 joining during the mandated COVID-19 work-from-home.
        • Nearly all Mitsubishi dealerships are currently open for business, and safely operating according to federal, state and local guidelines, though new state-by-state COVID cases may affect that.
          • Mitsubishi support to dealer partners and customers amid the COVID-19 crisis includes reimbursing for 100 percent of dealers’ COVID-19-related supplies and support expenses; developing remote, low and no-contact sales and service procedures and ramping up customer service efforts to support online sales.
            • This is the first Mitsubishi Motors quarterly sales report. Third quarter sales, July through September, will be reported on October 1, 2020.
