Also, wasn't Scotty the one saying that the Toyota UZ engine was trash a few years ago?

Long story short, they selected a random EcoBoost off the line, run on a dynamometer for 300 hours to replicate 150,000 customer miles. Shipped to Kansas City and installed on a F-150, driven to Astoria, Oregon to work as a log skidder dragging 110,000 pounds. Shipped to Miami Speedway and hooked up to a trailer carrying two racecars, and a payload of 11,300 pounds and run continuously on the track for 24 hours. Then it was taken to Arizona where it bested a Silverado and V8 and Ram Hemi V8 in an uphill towing contest pulling 9,000 pounds up a 6 percent grade. The engine was then shipped to a raceshop and was installed in a 7,100lb F-150 race truck where it practiced locally for 1,200 miles and then the truck raced in the Baja 1000 finishing first overall in the new stock engine class after 1,062 miles. After the torture test gauntlet the engine was shipped back to Dearborn where it was dyno tested and off to the Detroit auto show for a live teardown.

That is very nice that this engine is well tested, this is what Ford would need for it to sell. However, the strength for the Toyota brand with their 4Runner is not the new age tech, it is the fact that the tech has been out for a long time, is easily modified, years and years of parts. And there are tons of aftermarket equipment. If you look up the parts for the 4Runner, many of the chassis components date back to 2002 when the GX and 4Runner first debuted on the 120 chassis, many parts of the 120 4Runner are interchangeable with the 150. . Someone brought up overlanding and the 4Runner, keeping purchase costs low is an attractive thing. Most recently, Toyota has introduced the 4Runner with all those safery systems such as (blind spot, radar cruise)....well it also jacked the price up as well...those features are useless as they can be turned off anyways..so might as well give the option to delete.....But kudos for Ford, this Bronco will have its share of the market place, I don't the 4Runner will slow because of it....

The Bronco from the get-go will have over 150 OEM accessories. If the 4Runner sales slow it will be mainly due to it aging out. They need a new 4Runner/GX/Prado soon. But it will keep its niche market space due to it's heritage. The Bronco, 4Runner, and Wrangler will all co-exist well. It's a darn shame Nissan pulled the plug on the Xterra. I would love to see a comparison test of the Bronco, 4Runner, Wrangler, and Xterra.

The 4Runner would never win it...but the overland crowd would still like it. IMO

Agreed. I would choose the V8 over the Ecoboost too, but not because I dislike the Ecoboost. It's because the 5.0 is so mod-friendly, and a 800hp supercharged V8 sounds like more fun to me than a 400hp turbocharged V6.

But stock for stock it's really a toss-up, and I wouldn't be disappointed with either.

a friend just switched f-150s from a v8 version he got a couple of years ago (back then he wanted the v8 because he viewed it as supremely reliable) to a limited (i think) with ecoboost. he is not unhappy with the upgrade.

ecoboost mpg tanks badly when your towing, much moreso than the V8

I got to drive a 2018 Raptor about two months ago. I came away very impressed with it's on-road performance, well composed. Would make a great daily.

I usually park far away from folks so it wouldn't be that bad. But yes truck turning radius's are certainly not the strong suit of pickups.

Speaking of turning radius, do you remember your 06 Explorer? For decent sized SUVs they turned pretty darn well. My '03 was great in that department.

wasn't thinking so much about turning radius as far as parking, instead was thinking about the sheer size, width.

yup, it was great!

Some of those interior plastics look atrocious. Cool that the Escape has a rugged cousin
