Auto Shifters: Older is Usually Better
#46
I prefer the GS F gated forward and back shifter to the newfangled LC 500 shifter. The LC shifter just doesn't seem as intuitive for me yet. My M550i was the same. Old habits die hard I guess.

As much as I like MB overall, That's the one thing that puts me off to Mercedes vehicles. I relate column shifters to old 70's and 80's land yachts, and my uncles tugging and fighting with it just to get in gear. Flashbacks of something so outdated and clunky... Regardless of the technological improvements that are currently in place. The huge forward and back shifters are getting there too. Clunky, noisy when sliding from D to P, plus with modern interiors, they just look ridiculous as it doesn't match or fit.
I guess the one in my car is what they call "monostable". Neutral in the middle, up for Reverse, down for Drive, with the Park displayed as a button above all. Plus you never even have to press Park because the car automatically goes into Park once you press the start/stop button. Seems simple and super intuitive to me.
as I said in a similar thread a few months back, Some of y'all are really going to revolt once they move these to touch screens. Lmao.

The thread title is "auto shifters: older is usually better" but a Mercedes column shifter is NOTHING like the old mechanical many position (e.g. PRNDL) setup.
I just found this description:
absolutely nothing like ones in the past, lol.
i'd certainly be fine with that. I would not be fine with this, LOL
I just found this description:
To put your car into Drive, pull the lever up past the point of resistance. To put it into Reverse, push the lever down past the point of resistance. To put it into Neutral, pull the lever up slightly, stopping before you hit the resistance point. When you’re ready to switch to Park, simply press the button on the end of the lever.
i'd certainly be fine with that. I would not be fine with this, LOL

I agree that the M-B stalk-shifter leaves some to be desired, but IMO it is still better than a number of the newest electronic systems.

That is exactly what I would want in an Escalade. Or any truck.

They do not do this today like the did on the past. lots of little touches make an experience so awesome. Each dial is also LED edge tipped and projects the LED like a red laser light.

The F-150 still has a column shifter in certain configurations(mine included). I wouldn't have it any other way. Basically any F-150 with a bench seat(which I have) has a column shifter, but some with consoles also have it. It's mostly XL and XLT trims. The Super Duty only has a column shifter across the board.

Am I not allowed to have an opinion? I clearly stated a few posts up why I like it. This isn't a Ferrari here, it's a truck.
And yes, what's wrong with it? I guarantee you the vast majority of Escalade owners are fine with that. I at least hope the new electronic shifter in the new ones feels solid. I absolutely hate the buttons in the Chevy and GMC. They look cheap AF.
I'm jonesing for the whole vehicle, this is hardly a deal-breaker. I can't picture a Lexus with a column shifter. I don't mind a solid console gearshift like that, though. The one in my LS430 is wholly satisfying to use, this looks to be very similar.

The column-mounted shifters in Mercedes are wonderful as you can shift between PRND without having to take your hands off the steering wheel at all. It's like engaging your turn signals. Very convenient, especially during parallel parking with a lot of back and forth maneuvers & it frees up interior space. It's also super simple to operate. Lift the stalk all the way up for reverse, all the way down for drive, press the button at the end for park.
I don't mind the zig-zag one in my GS and prefer it to the straight forward and back shifters. The GS shifter is weighty and snaps into position with authority, feels high quality to use. Growing up I'd see high-end Acuras, Jaguars, Mercedes, etc. that all used zig-zag shifters whereas a lot of cheaper (and American cars) used the straight forward and back styles so I've always associated the zig-zag shifter with higher-end and more luxurious cars.
