Auto Shifters: Older is Usually Better
#91
Same; like I said, it looks nice. I don't want some rotary dial.
Escalade has a new console shifter similar to BMWs IIRC. That's cool, I guess, I just hope that it is very solid and satisfying. GM cars seem to get shifters right, I've noticed over the years. The regular, old school, straight back, console shifter on my family's 2015 Enclave is also solid and very satisfying to use--I noticed wayyy back. You can slam that thing around all day, every time you drive, and it won't mind.
And I agree the old LSs have great shifters, they feel precise and very solid, too. My hand rests there a lot of the time, as well.
So many things that weren't broken get "fixed," with mixed results.

not my pic but how about two 12 packs if you retract the cupholder. Not mistaken when I fit two 1 gallon jugs in there.

Didnt bother me one bit when I first test drove it and I never used a rotary shifter before. User error, especially when the steering wheel has volume controls, why is your friend using a **** for volume?
#94
His Ram was older but still had **** for volume. It's just what he told me. Still loves his truck.

This is a good example of an electronic shifter that makes zero sense and doesn’t free up any space. This is the Jaguar F Pace rental I have:
#96
Yes and that is electronically actuated to rise up, I believe; at least some Jags have it. That's not a "if" it breaks, it's a "when."
#97
Not only that, but, as AJT alludes to, if the F-Pace is like some other recent Jaguars, it also includes an electric motor/hardware and actuation-doors for raising/lowering the rotary-dial itself under the console......just more things to fail on notoriously unreliable Jags.

I think the 2019 Sonata had a more elegant shifter. The push button really adds no appeal
pretty terrible shifter in the LS

I don't get the obsession of hoarding crap in the center console, or the obsession with a bunch of cup holders. I am a minimalist, and I hate having anything I don't need in my car, so I prefer console mounted shifters, and I couldn't care less if they are not space efficient.

I like your attitude. Like you, I have always taken the position that driving comes first....drinks, cell-phones, recharging, cupholders, eating.....most, if not all, of that, can wait till one gets home.

Here is my 4Runner.
just perfect, it angled toward the driver in park. The N and R have their own colour. Nice classy leather with stitching...some chrome

Well, my cell phone integrates with the infotainment in all my cars, so i just stove it away. Nobody eats in my cars and lives. But that's not even the point - i see people carry a bunch of literal trash inside every compartment of their car, to the point that its disgusting. I am generally a neat freak, so I keep everything organized and minimalist everywhere including my cars.

Yes, that is beneficial for at least some drivers.
Toyota and Lexus (and the rebadged Corollas......Prizm/Vibe) used the multicolor PRNDL markings for years...it was one of the Toyota trademarks. Interesting, but I don't think it made a huge difference in visibility.
I never liked that zig-zag stuff, though (you probably know that from my reviews). Just makes for (IMO) unnecessary flinging the lever around....particularly when you are in a hurry and want to get moving.
