Thats like saying MB is known for Aclass or Cclass.
Not for iconic S-class.

They may not have had new 992 to test drive because they were sold out.
911 sales have been very strong and are actually up YOY even with covid19.

More 911s are being sold now than in 80s or 90s. 911 also outsells Boxster/Cayman even though those cars are way less expensive which further shows thats what ppl recognize the brand for. Otherwise they would just get the cheaper sports car.

With Mercs, it's all about the G-wagen.

Sadly, Idk if the Panamera has that same effect with Porsche... Though, I will admit I see the last-gen Panamera around quite a bit more than the newer ones.

As I said before, very region specific. I see way more 911s at the dealerships in stock and driving around but So-cal is one of the rare places where you can drive a Miata every day as the weather is so mild.

Cayenne and Macans are selling very strong too, and they had plenty of those. Its just not the bulk of their business. Its nothing against the 911, its just the nature of where Porsche is today as a company.

As for MB, I bet you people on the street don't associate the iconic S Class as much with the brand as they do their SUVs which they sell a LOT more of. BMW? Its the X5 today, or the X3. The 3 Series is an afterthought. Walk into the showroom, the SUVs are front and center and the all new 3 Series, the "iconic BMW" is gathering dust in a back corner.

I'm in the market for an S Class, many dealers have zero, or maybe 1 or 2 S Classes in stock. The ones they have have been on the lot for 6+ months.

Times change.

911 sold more than 9k units in 2019.
Cayenne did 19k units in 2019.
Macan did 22k.

911 outsells Panamera and Boxster/Cayman.
If you think its not their focus, you don’t know Porsche that well.

Also i believe 911 is still the most profitable vehicle by far.
According to a report shared by Auto News Europe, the Porsche 911 has a 47% profit margin and contributes 29% of Porsche's revenue.

I'm not saying it isn't Porsche's focus, I'm saying its not what defines Porsche to the public anymore. Porsche doesn't decide what stock dealers have or what they put in their showroom.

I just drove an S560 at a MB dealer in VA, right next to the Porsche dealer. I meant to take a picture, but the lot was full of Macans and Panameras and Cayennes, there were two Boxters and no 911s. But we're talking 15 Macans, 15 Cayennes, 10 Panameras and 2 Boxters.

356 probably seems pretty random, I admit that... haha When I was like 6 or 7 in the early '90s, my favorite move was Top Gun (as I'm sure it was for a few others in this thread) - that's where it started. That was probably the one of the first cars I considered "cool" then I saw one in person - with a roof! Been one of my favorite cars ever since!

To quote what bitkahuna always says, fixed it for you.

(Just Kidding. Anyone can make a typo.....I often do so myself).

I just drove an S560 at a MB dealer in VA, right next to the Porsche dealer
Chantilly......on Stonecroft Blvd? I knew the new Porsche place was under construction there, just down the road from the Mercedes shop, but I wasn't aware it was open now.

There's also a Porsche shop next to the M-B place at Tyson's Corner.

BTW, that huge Chevy/Buick/GMC/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep complex there at Tyson's, down the street from the M-B shop, is where I got all three of my Buicks.

no question the macan/cayenne is VERY important to porsche. But 911 is still what porsche is 'known for'. A bit like ford and the mustang... most people probably think the mustang is the most iconic ford, but the F150 is what pays the bills and of course they're everywhere.

I bet if you asked people on the street what the most iconic Ford is they wouldn’t say the Mustang today.

You can’t even recognize that you are wrong when facts are presented.
The fact that there are no 911s is because they sell much quicker than Macan and Cayenne. I showed you sales #s for Each model. 911 is probably the only model up YOY. Not to mention it generates a ton more profit than anything else.

992 gen just came out and they are selling extremely well.

The other huge factor for limited inventory is the clientele. If you know anything about 911 clients - they custom order their cars and are very picky with options/colors. I personally don’t know anyone that will pick a car off the lot when you are talking about a dream sports car for over $120k. Go try to build a 911 on their website. There are millions of options. Its not like MB or BMW where you have 2-3 main packages.

BTW if you think that Ford is not known for the Mustang- why did they name their new EV a Mustang? I’m sure the marketing team knows just a little bit about name recognition.

911 is known globally and been around over 50yrs. The other Porsche models all have 911 styling cues for a reason.

You haven't presented me with any "facts" that tell me I'm "wrong". Short of presenting me with a study where people were polled what car people think of when they think of a certain brand there's no way to "prove me wrong". I think you're looking at this as an enthusiast with vast car knowledge and aren't thinking about it as a regular consumer who is not a car enthusiast. Bear in mind, a lot of these people aren't going to notice the difference between a 911 and a 718.

There is absolutely more demand for Macans and Cayennes and Panamera than 911s. You posted the sales numbers, they show that. Those consumers are more likely to walk into a dealership and buy one off the lot than a 911 consumer, it makes sense why there is more stock than there is of 911s. My question was solely, do laypeople really think of the 911 when they think of Porsche now or do they think of their SUVs?

As for Ford, even I don't think of the Mustang when I think of Ford. It wouldn't be one of the top 3 models that pop into my head. I would think Explorer, F150, even Taurus before I think Mustang. Its a product of my generation and what Ford personifies to me.

Not sure why this makes you so angry.
