Well, there is some good news on the next-gen SL. The 6-cylinder AMG engine will get a stay of execution after all and will be present in the SL 53 - turns out the hybrid I4 was inappropriate for this application. Good choice. It will be joined by the V8 TT and hybrid V8 TT. Interesting tidbit from an article from Roadshow:
Below are the spy photos of the car completely uncovered that weren't included in the article (for obvious reasons):

"90% of the customers will never go to the track, and they want to have a comfy car as well, and that's what we need to provide. These are very valuable customers and we want to have them with us." It will also attract enthusiasts that want a performance car, though, and therein lies the new SL's real appeal.

Not sure I like the unmasked headlights above
I have seen renderings of the new SL with headlights with a more appealing shape than those, they are different from those on the current AMG GT, but look quite a bit better than those on the real car above.

Seeing that this car also replaces the S Class coupe/vert, you gotta have rear seats.

Also, CTJill is right. The R107 had jump seats as a factory accessory and the R129 had rear seats that could be optioned as well.

I first found out when we went to a car show for classic cars in Toronto. It was in imported model. Not sure if they were ever available in North America. The one I saw was from the 80s. I think I saw a fixed coupe as well. But can’t recall.
