Kia's 98% retail sales shows the excellent job they've done of (their goal of) getting out of the terrible 'fleet' market which they used to rely heavily on. Good job too with the car rental business in terrible shape.

Interesting that in a world of (supposed) SUV / crossover dominance nowadays, in August, the Civlc outsold all other Honda products except the immensely popular CR-V. It outsold the Pilot, Odyssey, Passport, Ridgeline, and HR-V. So did the Accord, but not by quite as high a margin.

September 1, 2020 , Camden, N.J. -

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS AUGUST SALES AS BEST MONTH OF 2020

  • Best month of 2020 for Outback and Ascent
  • Fourth consecutive month of 50,000+ vehicle sales

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 57,885 vehicle sales for August 2020, a 17 percent decrease compared with record August 2019. These results reflect the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding economic recovery. Following eleven consecutive years of sales records, Subaru reported year-to-date sales of 376,457, a 21 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2019.

August marked the fourth consecutive month of 50,000+ vehicle sales for the automaker. As the top performing carline by volume, Forester sales increased 1 percent in August 2020 compared with the same month a year ago. BRZ posted a nearly 69 percent increase compared to August 2019.

“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our retailer network, we are able to count August as the best sales month of 2020,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “Our retailers are continuing to sell at very high levels of sales efficiency given their on-ground inventory levels while at the same time providing a Love Promise customer experience. We are grateful for their outstanding efforts.”

“The Forester was again a standout this month, helping us maintain market share in August,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We expect improving inventory and the arrival of 2021 models at our retailers will further improve our sales results in September and the fourth quarter.”

Hyundai Motor America Reports August 2020 Sales

  • August SUV Retail Sales Grew 8%
  • Palisade Continues To Rally Sales; Kona Sets New August Sales Record
  • Hyundai Continues to Gain Market Share
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 1, 2020 – Hyundai Motor America reported total August sales of 58,361 units, an 8% decline compared with August 2019. Retail sales were down 2%. Hyundai fleet sales were down 63% and represented 4% of total volume. There were three additional selling days in August 2019 and Labor Day holiday weekend sales were included in last year’s August numbers. On a daily selling rate basis, Hyundai retail sales increased 7% year over year. Industry forecasts predicted a 20% drop in total sales for the entire industry.

“Despite a down market, our SUVs continue to drive sales and deliver results for us and our dealers,” said Randy Parker, vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “Our entire line up performed well, but Palisade led the pack and is one of the fastest selling vehicles in the industry. Sonata sales were up, because customers still want great, high-quality, safe sedans.”

Despite this month’s sale decline, Hyundai has increased its retail market share nearly a full percentage point on the year, the biggest gain in the industry.

Hyundai sold 55,915 retail units in August, with SUVs representing 67% of the total retail mix. Hyundai SUV retail sales grew 8%. Retail sales of the flagship SUV Palisade were up 56%, while Kona retail sales jumped 22%, establishing new August total and retail sales records. Sonata retail sales increased 11% in August as research from Cars.com found that 41% of shoppers were in the market for sedans, higher than SUVs and crossovers (39%).

But look at the total number of cars (50K) vs trucks (70K). don't miss the forest for the trees. So yes, SUV/Crossover is quite dominant, and CR-V is the brand leader, no longer Accord or Civic.

Well its more like they were forced out. Hertz filed for bankruptcy and the reality is, no one is renting cars.

not true, hyundai/kia made a strategic decision several years ago to do 2 things... go nuts in the cuv/suv space (at a time they were mostly sedans) and get out of the fleet business which repesented a HUGE chunk of their sales. it's taken a while but as they reduced fleet sales of course that had a negatve impact overall on their sales volume, but it improved their profitability and removed their reliance on those fleet sales which is 'lucky' too given the almost entire collapse of the rental car industry, not just hertz.

Automotive industry rebound falters in August as sales slip

August was a mixed bag for multiple reasons

Byron Hurd
Last Updated: Sep 1, 2020 @ 16:35
The U.S. auto industry took yet another tumble in August. Those manufacturers who still announce their sales figures at the end of each month reported declines pretty much across the board. Per industry analysts, transaction prices slipped slightly in August compared to July as well, despite a nearly 4-percent increase over last year's average. There were two fewer selling days in August this year, contributing to reported declines.

Toyota on Tuesday reported a 23% drop in U.S. new vehicle sales in August versus the same month in 2019, as a two-month industry-wide shutdown of auto production in the spring to halt the spread of COVID-19, as well as an uncertain economic recovery, weighed on sales. This was Toyota’s fifth straight month of U.S. sales declines.

South Korean automaker Hyundai said its U.S. sales fell 8.4% in August, largely due to a decline in fleet sales to rental car companies, government agencies and corporations. Hyundai had posted a slight sales gain in July. SUVs made up two-thirds of Hyundai's total retail volume in August, the company said, indicating a further amplification of existing sales trends. Luxury subsidiary Genesis checked in with a 22.6% decline for the month of August

Toyota and Hyundai's slips were too large to be accounted for merely by the decrease in total selling days in August. Mazda's 5.1% slip, by contrast, was actually a 2.2% increase in terms of daily selling rate (DSR), which accounts for the number of days dealerships were open.

Even Subaru, fresh of a years-long streak of growth, is not immune. The all-wheel-drive automaker's sales dropped 17.4% compared to last August and total sales for the year are off by 20.5%.

Transaction prices also slipped slightly compared to July, but remain up 3.9% compared to the same time period in 2019.

“Vehicles are continuing to sell at higher transaction prices when compared to the prior year even amidst the pandemic,” said Eric Lyman, Chief Industry Analyst for TrueCar subsidiary ALG. “However, we are seeing month-over-month declines in average transaction price since May due to pullbacks on the richer automaker incentives that were in the market at the beginning of the pandemic. Consumers leaned into those offers to upgrade to higher priced trims and models which drove up transaction prices.”

“For the second month in a row, since March, automaker revenue for new vehicle sales will be up month-over-month by almost six percent. This is a positive sign for the auto industry as targeted incentive spending by automakers continue to fuel the recovery for new vehicle sales,” added Lyman.
