Default Elon Musk takes the VW ID.3 for a spin: 'It's pretty good'

Diess clarifies that the two automakers are not seeking a deal or collaboration

Short video of the drive here

FRANKFURT — Volkswagen’s Chief Executive Herbert Diess on Monday sought to quell speculation that the world’s largest carmaker, which is on a mass production push for electric cars, has plans to develop deeper ties with startup rival Tesla.

Diess met with Tesla’s Chief Executive Elon Musk in Braunschweig, Germany, last week, and during his visit VW let Musk drive its new ID.3 electric car.

“Just to be clear: We just drove the ID.3 and had a chat — there is no deal/cooperation in the making,” Diess said in a post on Linkedin, which included a video of the two executives driving the vehicle on an airfield.

“Thanks for the visit, Elon! Hope you like the video. It was great driving the ID.3 with you! You were just quite critical with the available torque at higher speed. I told you: “Yes, we are on the runway — but no need for takeoff — it's not a sports car.”

Musk's reaction to the ID.3? "I think for a non-sporty car it's pretty good," he says in a video on the Volkswagen Group's Twitter.

What he really means to say: "This is no threat to me, but I'll say it's good to lower their standards."

And yes, I know Elon publicly claims that he wants more EV competition- doesn't mean he intends on losing them.

Other brands are making progress though. Polestar 2 is a comparable experience to the Model 3 Dual Motor. The Lucid Air seems like a better car on paper than the Model S. I'm all for other EVs to drive competition.

Polestar is really good, except the infotainment is terrible.

So Elon wants to drive some non-Tesla products? Excellent...more power to him. I'm a firm believer that, the more different vehicles you sample, the more you learn. (note my signature)

Default VW's new ID.3 electric car harshly criticized by Germany's leading test publication

Electronics and fit-and-finish panned, but driving dynamics praised

FRANKFURT — Germany's Auto Motor und Sport said Volkswagen's new electric car, the ID.3, had fallen short of the carmaker's usual standards of fit and finish, and had a limited operating range, in a review of a pre-production model ahead of the car's launch.

"The inner side of the hood looks like it was painted with a spray can," the publication said, lamenting the absence of Volkswagen's trademark build quality in the car they were testing in this week's edition.

The review said "the car does not meet VW's usual high VW requirements for accuracy of fit of the body parts, minimal gap dimensions, high-quality materials and details."The criticism comes as Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess relinquished day-to-day management responsibility for the VW brand, following criticism by the company's labor leaders over his management style.

Uneven panel gaps, an infotainment system that takes a long time to fire up, and a "disoriented" navigation system which fails to work were other features which the publication help up for criticism.

"The drive and chassis, on the other hand, work perfectly," the review said. "The equally natural and agile handling of the compact is one of the strengths of the ID.3."

The reviewers cited a "solid" operating range of 359 kilometers (223 miles) in defensive, eco-minded driving, but in a more vigorous test lap including highway driving, the battery was drained after 260 kilometers (161 miles).

Volkswagen's labor chief in March criticized the company's electric car program for falling behind schedule. VW rejected the criticism but admitted that the cars needed last-minute improvements.

Diess last week drove the Tesla Model Y and praised the vehicle.

"This car is for us in many aspects (not in all!) a reference: user experience, updatability, driving features, performance of the top of the range models, charging network, range," Diess said.

The VW brand plans to build 1.5 million electric cars by 2025. Volkswagen Group, whose brands also include Porsche, Audi, Skoda, Bentley and Bugatti, will launch 75 electric cars by 2029 and be capable of building 26 million vehicles.

Auto Motor und Sport concluded by saying VW needed to make fixes quickly, because unlike Tesla, VW doesn't get a pass as a "beginner" automaker.

The electric field causes stress on the body panels and causes inconsistent gaps.

i thought it was the quantum flux capacitor that was causing issues.

"Quantum", at one time, was actually the name of a VW vehicle-series. It was essentially the Passat, with the Quantum name used here in the U.S.

There is a strange dynamic between current VW (VW proper, not Porsche or Audi) leadership and Tesla leadership. Although they are competitive in the marketplace, they are also cordial publicly.
