These are the features that will no long work Period! That I care about:Your 2017 Lexus IS 350 offers available Lexus Enform services that rely on access to 3G wireless networks.

As of October 31, 2022, at 11:59PM CST, the following available Lexus Enform subscription services will be terminated:
• Lexus Enform Safety Connect®1 including Automatic Collision Notification, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Emergency Assistance Button and Stolen Vehicle Locator.

• Lexus Enform Remote2 including Remote Engine Start/Stop, Door Lock/Unlock, Vehicle Finder, Guest Driver Monitor, Vehicle Status and Alerts, Key Fob Remote Start, and Integration with Alexa® and The Google Assistant.

• Lexus Enform Destination Assist3 including 24-hour live response center agents.

• Lexus Enform Service Connect4 including Vehicle Health Report, Vehicle Alerts and Maintenance Alerts.

The problem is the vehicle is set up to receive commands directly from the cellular network and cannot be reconfigured to do so thru a WiFi hotspot. All of the features listed above by DasBoot need the cellular network to function. For example, for Remote Start, the cell phone will be with the driver not inside the vehicle providing a hotspot.

MB started using 4G in MY2017 on most new models.

Genesis was 3G till 2017 and started to use 4G in 2018,

Apparently Hyundai has a $500 activation fee for Blue Link if it is expired for one-full calendar year.

GM used to replace the OnStar for a free ONLY if it was still under warranty.

Never knew there were these limitations to telematics. So interesting

Lets put it this way, back in 1998 my dad paid $3,000 (thats $4,700 today) for a Lexus built in cell phone in the LS400 that was totally worthless in 3 years because it was analog. Technology moves forwards quickly, and thats the downside to having technology like this built into a car.

I do understand the frustration at losing the ability to use those features. I'd be disappointed too, but that is the way technology goes.

But I do think the impact to used car values as a result of this is vastly overstated. I doubt it'll make much, if any, difference.

Most owners don't pay the $20 a month all these features cost past the trial.

When I posted the first time re: Audi, I did a brief perusal of their website press releases - there were a bunch for MY2016, but definitely some that didn't mention it until MY2017. Don't know if there were any models left after that.

Hard to say. T-Mobile hasn't even confirmed their 2G sunset and that is 90s tech! I don't do Apple but I don't even believe there is a 5G capable iPhone yet?

?
So Lexus/Toyota is not really “that” far behind. I think the first Toyota with 4G is the Prius in 2018. Lexus LS would have been 2018...

It's because 2G is still used in the rest of the world and it's spectrum and cost of running the network is meaningless. The 3G and 4G spectrums are being allocated to 5G so the sun setting of 4G will happen pretty quickly. I'd say in 5 year timeframe, I could see Lexus pulling the plug on all 4G.

The revenue stream. An 18-month subscription to Audi Connect, for example, costs $499. The full Lexus Enform suite costs $24/mo or $240/year.

Well yeah, that's the whole reason I brought up 2G, the point being that it isn't the introduction of new technology or the age of old technology that determines sunsetting / forced obsolescence.

This isn't accurate at all. The whole point of 5G is that it's going to use high-band spectrum, which isn't used by 3G/4G at all (hence all the FCC spectrum auctions that will be ongoing for the next few years). 5G will use mid-band and low-band only for coverage, and existing infrastructure can handle both LTE and 5G (including some systems that do this by default, e.g., Ericsson). It's unlikely LTE will sunset during this decade, much less in 5 years.
