Default Please Help With Car Buying Decision - Used 2017 or New 2021 Lexus???

I want to buy a Lexus IS Silver/Black with Navigation in Q1 2021. I'm looking at a used 2017 and a brand new 2021. I have a trade-in and I'll be paying cash for the difference. I've never had a car payment in my life and I don't want one. My current car and trade-in is a 2004 Lexus ES330 - Silver/Black with Navigation and 160K miles on it that I paid cash for brand new way back in 2004. It's time to upgrade. I plan to keep this next car for 15+ years. I only drive about 5K miles a year and live in S FL. I'm 51 and can easily afford to pay cash for the 2021 but after running the numbers it just doesn't seem to make sense to me. Is the brand new 2021 worth the extra money? What do you think? Am I missing something? Below is my financial analysis - I made some assumptions - please comment -

Lexus IS F Sport with Navigation - Silver/Black
Q1 2021 Purchase
Year--------------------------------2017---------------2021
Miles-------------------------------30,000-------------0
Dealer Price/MSRP-----------$27,000-----------$46,000
Discounted Price (-10%)------$24,300----------$41,400
Trade (2004 ES330, 160K)----$4,000-----------$4,000
Taxes 7%---------------------------$1,421-----------$2,618
Fees----------------------------------$500-------------$500
Total OTD - Trade + Cash------$22,221---------$40,518
Difference----------------------------82%-------------$18,297

I am cash buyer as well and always buy used. I saved over 20k each on our NX and GS. That's real money that your calcs also show.

With the IS, the 2021 is a redesign so you will have to decide if it's worth to invest in the older body style or worth paying the additional cash for the latest. Going from a 2004 to a 2017 will be just as drastic as going to the 2021. My last was from a 2006 to a 2016 and there's not one part that dosent feel brand new (without it all actually being brand new). I always try to buy a few years into the new body design to save the most but also enjoy the latest body style for a few years. I got lucky with the GS that it was discontinued so I'll always have the latest design.

If you really want the new body design, wait at least a year to save some real money on a lightly used example. Otherwise save a ton of cash on the 2017 then spend a few hundred for the screen mirroring or carplay/android auto upgrade to get the infotainment as good as the 2021.

I can't imagine buying a car without CarPlay/Android Auto and daily driving it for 15 years. 2021 for me, as those features were new with the redesign.

For a few hundred you can add an aftermarket unit. I went with a non-nav option on my 2016 GS altogether, and saved a ton of money knowing that I'd have a superior screen mirroring system up and running in a few hours.

Yeah, you can easily add CarPlay. Personally, Apple Car Play is overrated (but any new car purchase should have it)

Bearing in mind, I believe that the 2021 is the refresh IS, I would absolutely get that. The car is just massively improved, much better looking, tech is better. No brainer IMO.

As someone who has added CarPlay, adding it and having it from the factory aren't the same. There are quirks with the add on, system crashes, workarounds, etc. Its certainly better than not having it, but now that I also have it on a vehicle thats factory, the factory always works.

That's why I went with screen mirroring for an aftermarket option, it provides more flexibility and it's more stable.

Screen Mirroring isn't CarPlay though. I've been making do without CarPlay in this rental and using my phone on a mount and its just not at all the same thing.

I think it's better, I can use any app I want and have it displayed on the oem interface without worry of any system issues.

I totally disagree. What I want is an interface designed for a car, which is what CarPlay and Android Auto are. My phone's apps and its own interface aren't designed to be controlled or used as part of a car's infotainment. I find myself distracted in a major and dangerous way trying to navigate my phone's UI while driving vs using CarPlay.

On Android it's all voice controlled, maybe the limitation is with the iPhone then.

OP, sorry for hijacking your thread for a discussion of the infotainment options. If you plan to keep the car for 15 years, go with the 2021.

I agree with Steve that the CarPlay/Auto interface is better designed to work on the car's infotainment system than a Mirroring kit, which I have installed in my car (Beatsonic IF04-EP with a WiFi dongle for wireless mirroring).

But to BMGS's point, can Carplay/Auto open and run any app on the phone? For example, I frequently mirror Google Photo albums during my daily commute, and occasionally YouTube videos on the Nav screen on long road trips. I actually use the mirroring more often in this way than for displaying Google Maps. If CarPlay won't allow any app to open, I am glad I don't have it.

No, CarPlay will only open CarPlay apps, navigation apps, communication apps, music apps etc. I don’t think we want most people looking at pictures and watching movies while they drive lol.

But to the OP, you’re going to keep it so long get the latest car.

I can. Don’t need it. Overrated.
