New (old) Weekend Cruiser
Picked up a 1985 Mercedes 380SL from my uncle this weekend. He was the longtime owner of this car and I've always admired it. I've been asking to buy for the past 10 years, and after upgrading to an S63 cabriolet, he was finally ready to let it go. I drove the car from Napa back to Los Angeles this weekend and it's amazing how well this thing handles the highway. I cruised at 80-85MPH the entire way home without a hiccup (I did have a tire issue, but that's no fault of the car). Color wouldn't typically be my first choice, but I can overlook that since I know the history of the car. First time in a while that I've strayed from the Lexus brand. I have too many cars in my stable now, so need to make a decision on what will stay and what will go.

Congratulations, COOLIS...that's quite a find. A colleague of mine has a bright red one of around that vintage....I think an '85 or '86.
Back then, Mercedes did what were arguably the best cars in the industry......Lexus, of course, did not yet exist. Before the 1990's, Mercedes products were built like tanks....they went downhill noticeably after Lexus started pressuring them with lower-cost competition. However, one can still see at least some of the old M-B tank-like structure in the G-Wagen.
Never heard that term before.....that is a first for me.

‘I like 80s and 90s luxury as well. Just something about it all. I find the details and trimmings are better than they are today.

could it have something to do with how 80s/90s luxury meant actually being as comfortable/well built/easy to use as possible and not just how many gizmos and gimmicks can we pack into this car?
