Default Looking for an alternative

Hi Folks,

I'm a reformed Audi enthusiast. I had a quattro when I was in college but then my brother cracked it up. I've been wanting an Audi ever since but, now that I'm a parent, I need something more reliable.
Enter Lexus.
I'm looking for an alternative to the 2007 S4. I found one for a reasonable price but it sounds like they have timing chain tensioner issues and the timing chain is way in the back of the engine. So if that goes, it's a 40 hour job to fix.

So, here I am, asking for some recommedations for a lexus that is comparable to that Audi.

TIA!

Welcome to CL as a new poster.

It's not exact, but probably the closest comparison would be the IS350 AWD.

I don't know of any engines that have the "timing chain tensioner in the back." What model are you speaking about? It's more likely the tensioner is just difficult to get to, but this is true for all vehicles. Generally, there is more room to work on a timing chain or belt on a RWD vs a FWD vehicle. Transverse (vs longitudinal) engine mounting makes access more difficult.

No timing chain, or timing belt job will be inexpensive, regardless of brand. Most Lexus models will be somewhat more reliable than other brands/models, but they aren't perfect. With normal driving and maintenance, you will likely be happier with a Lexus than with most other brands when it comes to repair issues.

Get a 2008+ Lexus ISF - much more reliable than Audi S4 and has a V8.
These will probably cost much more than the Audi though as they didn’t sell many.

If you have higher budget than go for 2016+ GSF.

The OP seems to want AWD. I don't think most Lexus full-F models have AWD.

The B6/B7 S4 (a 2007 would be a B7) has a 4.2L V8 wedged in, the timing chain tensioner, and mostly the brittle plastic chain guides are the main culprit. Have an 06 S4 Avant.

I don't think there is any sort of direct replacement of a V8, AWD little sedan with the option of a manual transmission if you so desire. I doubt we'll see anything like that ever again.

As others noted, possibly the IS350 AWD is the "closest" competitor from the Lexus side, but it would leave a lot to be desired I think. GS F is good and used ones are starting to come down a bit in price, but would be RWD only and require some tire swaps for sure in Massachusetts.

Outside of Lexus, something like the Genesis G70 (although tight back seat) or the Kia Stinger GT could also be seen in the mold of something like the S4, but none would have a V8. Both of those should have decent reliability and at least the coverage of a 10 year powertrain warranty if bought new.

Try an IS250 AWD It doesn't have the power an Audi S4 has but it sure is a blast to drive. We have 2 in our family and 1 ISF. The IS250's really are flickable fun cars to drive. One son drives a Scion FRS, and I came out of 911 twin turbo, so we like driving. The iS250's ALWAYS amaze me especially in the snow. Absolute blast, reliable, cheap to fix, easy to work on, and bullet proof. You can go with a GS AWD but not as much fun. My humble opinion.

You won't find a S4 replacement w/ a Lexus nameplate......What you will find is a great reliable, qualitiy vehicle.....Yeah you have to tear down the whole frontend of the Audi to get to the t/c's....Also have fun if you have to replace the clutch.
