Hey guys,

Me and a friend are having a lil debate here regarding v6 and i6. I tried searching the forums, but could not find anything. Can someone please inform me on the differences and advantages of these? Thank you so very much.

Off the top of my head, the I6 is pretty durable and is smoother, although the new V6s are getting to be pretty smooth too. The V6 is more compact. That's all I could think of.

The I-6 will produce more power, more dependably than the V-6 will. It has an uncanny ability to simply POUND out the numbers while remaining virtually bulletproof. They also tend to run much more efficiently.

The I6 is much more smoother and powerful. The v6 is ok but it seems louder and definitely not as smooth. This is from personal experience comparing the i6 in my gs3 to a loaner new es300 and my father's new rx330. Just drive the GS and ES and u will see what im talking about.

If the I6 has all the advantages over V6, why produce any cars with V6?

The advantages of the I6 are obvious, very smooth, proven power and excellent durability. Lot’s of big rigs run turbo diesile I6 engines to haul tons of weight for unheard of mileage.

Portability of the V6 is why they produce them. You can easily fit a V8 or even V12 in the same Lineal space that an I6 needs. Remember the old 240z, 260z, 280zx, Jag xk models; next time you see one take a look at how long the front hood is reflecting the amount of lineal cubage required to host an I6. Can you imagine a Suzuki Grand Vitara with an I6, Probably not? The V6 will fit in most I4 engine bays.

That’s my take on it.

GM is also starting to use more inline engines, the Trailblazer got an I6 and now the new Colorado (mid-sized truck) is getting an I4 and an I5, the I5 is more powerful than the vortec V6 they have now.

Just curious, do they ever use a I-6 in a Front Wheel Drive? All of the I-6's I can think of are RWD. My guess is the V-6 leaves more room under the hood for FWD.

I think you're right, I6s are long and that's why they can't be mounted side-ways like most engines that are FWD.

The VW 2.8 & 3.1VR6 engine is an I6, I think.

But the pistons are positioned in a zig zag pattern, kinda like a V6!.

It has only has one head so I guess it would be considered an I6...

VW has been coming out with some interesting V or W patten engines, such as the one posted above and the W8.

I think they are considered W or V patterns because the pistons are not lined up in a straight line like the I6.
