Hyundai/Kia recalls and lawsuits

I've actually had this convo with a friend. His argument was basically, Chinese or other Asian cars don't meet safety standards.
My argument is much different. China may or may not have met safety standards, but that doesn't make logical sense. How is it that Japan and South Korea - two smaller GDP countries are able to meet safety standards but not China? I believe the US place tariffs and sanctions on countries that aren't "friendly".

Its simple, because they don't want to and don't need to. Toyota makes cars that won't pass US safety standards they just don't sell them here. There are all kinds of multi-passenger vans etc that they sell in different markets. China is such a huge market, a bigger market than the US, that Chinese carmakers don't need to sell their cars in the US.

Other goods aren't subject to the regulatory requirements that cars are.

Ah man, that's just friggin ugly. I mean what was going through people's heads when they drew this design on paper? Let's make it big, square and ugly. And let's give it a big engine to fight that wall of air...
Oh yeah, let's glue fake wood panels all over it, maybe they will think it's real

lol that was not a real model. That Hyundai reminds me of the Griswoldmobile with its excessive details and doubled up lights.
