I've never seen a coil spring break in my 55 years of wrenching, but I've lived in California my entire life. The road departments across the country need to find a salt substitute for de-icing roadways!
On the other hand, I can't believe how many people are running around with break light issues, and I have noticed some brands have more issues than others, like GM and Hyundai/Kia. I think we see more of this now because of the lack of traffic cops. Some people won't address an issue until they have a ticket in hand and are facing fines.
Hyundai/Kia would help their bottom line if they started an internal campaign to address quality concerns. They are too focused on innovation, style and performance, which are all good things, but without quality, I'm not interested.

Location under my avatar. Broken coils are a thing here for sure the bottom area accumulates salt and rots. Rear subframes rot out as well and sometimes struts. I've even seen knuckles fail where it meets the strut. This is on Toyota's not German cars simply because 20+ year old German cars are rare.
20 year old German stuff is common, they do far better when old than Toyota since you can actually buy any part you want new without problems. It's just expensive unless you work on them yourself, but people still keep them alive if it's stuff like old flagships and the sporty cars.
Same deal with most brands, the cool stuff gets to stay alive because people care.

“The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “engine valve springs may break while driving due to fatigue cracking as a result of damage to the springs during manufacture by the supplier.” A broken valve spring can cause a loss of engine power and, “in rare cases, a hole in the engine block,” Kia says.
A hole in the engine block can lead to an engine fire, the report notes. Kia dealers will replace the engine sub-assembly to correct the problem.”
