Wonder what the engine-longevity factor is going to be with that much HP in a block that small? Some folks are concerned that Ford and GM are already trying to get too much HP out of their own turbo three-pots.
With this ground up performance engine design 100% by Toyota? Left in stock tune I wouldn't be concerned about it. It's more likely that it's detuned a bit to allow it to have very good longevity if left unmodified.
Toyota has undoubtedly learned a thing or two about three cylinder long term durability from the 660cc turbo inline-three engines developed by their subsidiary Daihatsu for many years.

What really gets me annoyed is that the GR Yaris shown here is left hand drive. The images do not appear to be flopped versions of a right hand drive GR Yaris. Apparently they actually produce a version of this for some country that stipulates cars be left hand drive.
So the basic drive layout for a U.S. and Canadian version already exists and yet Toyota STILL has no plans to bring it over to North America.
Instead they will spend R&D money on a heavier GR Corolla hatch.... which would have to transfer over every bit of this car's 4WD, turbo I-3, 6-speed manual transmission, dual Torsen LSD, front and rear Brembo braked, manual handbrake and three mode drive selector goodness to be an agreeable compromise to getting the GR Yaris the rest of the world gets.
Only the Torsen LSDs (assuming the same differential pumpkins are used on the Corolla) and Brembo brakes would be things that owners could realistically order from Toyota Japan and add to the coming GR Corolla variant but if any of those other features are not included on the cars that North America gets it will be very difficult for owners to add them into their vehicles without some serious warranty-voiding work.
Fingers crossed that with the GR Corolla hatchback 100% of the hardware from the GR Yaris w/Circuit Pack (giving you the front and rear Torsen LSDs) will carry over.
Nobody would buy this in America. It would be like $50K.
It is pretty amazing with all the tech.
Most powerful 3 cylinder in the world
There are plenty of people who will buy it as it will be a somewhat limited production high performance model (25k total GR Yaris examples worldwide for all the model years it will be on sale). Unfortunately we will not get the GR Yaris in North America even though there does exist a LHD version for some European countries that will get it. However we will get the same drivetrain in a GR Corolla hatchback and that is supposed to be somewhere under or just over $40k ballpark or wherever the Subaru WRX STI now sits. There will be buyers for it. My hope is that it won't be stupidly limited but rather will get regular production numbers for the few years it will be on sale (GR Corolla variant) in North America.
So this new Yaris GR is hand build on the same factory space as the LFA. 20 times longer to build than the regular Yaris. Built in a cell, and not on a assembly line. Handcrafted
Just a quick update of a very interesting information for you, americans, that can't have the Yaris GR.
Had a long chat with my friend owning a Toyota garage and he gave me a very frightening, unofficial, statistic.
From the 7 Toyota Yaris GR he sold to it's customers, only ONE is still on the streets.
All the others CRASHED ! In one of those six cases, the driver was actually saved by the stiff passenger cell of the Yaris GR and the automatic alert system, as he drove off a cliff and landed several dozens of meters down the road, knocked unconscious by the force of the crash. Without that, he would not have been found.
I agree, several of our roads are looking like that...
...but it looks like this car requires an experienced driver with lots of self control, to not become a statistic.
